किष्किन्धाकाण्डः सर्गः 25

50 verses

स सुग्रीवं च तारां च साङ्गदां सहलक्ष्मणः। समानशोकः काकुत्स्थः सान्त्वयनिदमब्रवीत्॥

sa sugrīvaṃ ca tārāṃ ca sāṅgadāṃ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ| samānaśokaḥ kākutsthaḥ sāntvayanidamabravīt||

Thereupon, Kākutstha, with Laksmana, equally aggrieved, said, consoling Sugrīva, and Tārā together with Angada.

न शोकपरितापेन श्रेयसा युज्यते मृतः। यदत्रान्तरं कार्यं तत् समाधातुमर्हथ ॥

na śokaparitāpena śreyasā yujyate mṛtaḥ| yadatrāntaraṃ kāryaṃ tat samādhātumarhatha ||

Grief and lamentations do not tend to the welfare of the deceased. It therefore behoveth you to perform the after ceremonies.

लोकवृत्तमनुष्ठेयं कृतं वो बाष्पमोक्षणम्। न कालादुत्तरं किंचित् कर्म शक्यमुपासितुम्॥

lokavṛttamanuṣṭheyaṃ kṛtaṃ vo bāṣpamokṣaṇam| na kālāduttaraṃ kiṃcit karma śakyamupāsitum||

You have satisfied the worldly practice with a profuse discharge of tears. It is not proper to delay the performance of appointed actions.

नियतिः कारणं लोके नियतिः कर्मसाधनम्। नियतिः सर्वभूतानां नियोगेष्विह कारणम्॥

niyatiḥ kāraṇaṃ loke niyatiḥ karmasādhanam| niyatiḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ niyogeṣviha kāraṇam||

Time is the prime cause in this world, and the source of the accomplishment of actions. And Time it is that leads men to actions.

न कर्ता कस्यचित् कश्चिन्नियोगेनापि चेश्वरः। स्वभावे वर्तते लोकस्तस्य कालः परायणम्॥

na kartā kasyacit kaścinniyogenāpi ceśvaraḥ| svabhāve vartate lokastasya kālaḥ parāyaṇam||

No one is the lord of another person, and no one leads him to actions. People are subject to their actions of previous existence and Time aids them.

न कालः कालमत्येति न कालः परिहीयते। स्वभावं च समासाद्य न कश्चिदतिवर्तते॥

na kālaḥ kālamatyeti na kālaḥ parihīyate| svabhāvaṃ ca samāsādya na kaścidativartate||

Even the Eternal being cannot withstand the ways of Time. He never decayeth-and no one else can withstand the course of Time.

न कालस्यास्ति बन्धुत्वं न हेतुर्न पराक्रमः। न मित्रज्ञातिसम्बन्धः कारणं नात्मनोऽवशः॥

na kālasyāsti bandhutvaṃ na heturna parākramaḥ| na mitrajñātisambandhaḥ kāraṇaṃ nātmano'vaśaḥ||

It has no friend, no cause and no one can overcome it. It has no kinsman, no relation; even it is not subject to itself.

किं तु कालपरीणामो द्रष्टव्यः साधु पश्यता। धर्मश्चार्थश्च कामश्च कालक्रमसमाहिताः॥

kiṃ tu kālaparīṇāmo draṣṭavyaḥ sādhu paśyatā| dharmaścārthaśca kāmaśca kālakramasamāhitāḥ||

The wise can perceive the work of Time. Piety, wealth and desire are all subject to it.

इतः स्वां प्रकृतिं वाली गतः प्राप्तः क्रियाफलम्। सामदानार्थसंयोगैः पवित्रं प्लवगेश्वरः॥

itaḥ svāṃ prakṛtiṃ vālī gataḥ prāptaḥ kriyāphalam| sāmadānārthasaṃyogaiḥ pavitraṃ plavageśvaraḥ||

Vāli, the lord of monkeys, has attained to his own true state, reaping the fruits of his actions, acquired by virtue of his royal accomplishments namely forgiveness and charity.

स्वधर्मस्य च संयोगाज्जितस्तेन महात्मना। स्वर्गः परिगृहीतश्च प्राणानपरिरक्षता॥

svadharmasya ca saṃyogājjitastena mahātmanā| svargaḥ parigṛhītaśca prāṇānaparirakṣatā||

The abode of the celestials, which was conquered by this high-souled one by his former piety, has now been occupied by him after resigning his body.

एषा वै नियतिः श्रेष्ठा यां गतो हरियूथपः। तदलं परितापेन प्राप्तकालमुपास्यताम्॥

eṣā vai niyatiḥ śreṣṭhā yāṃ gato hariyūthapaḥ| tadalaṃ paritāpena prāptakālamupāsyatām||

This is the best course of Time that has been attained to by the lord of monkey-herds. No more with lamentations therefore; do you perform the actions that are worthy of being performed on this occasion.

वचनान्ते तु रामस्य लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा। अवदत् प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सुग्रीवं गतचेतसम्॥

vacanānte tu rāmasya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā| avadat praśritaṃ vākyaṃ sugrīvaṃ gatacetasam||

After Rāma had spoken thus, Laksmana, the slayer of foes, addressed Sugrīva, senseless with grief, with the following sound words.

कुरु त्वमस्य सुग्रीव प्रेतकार्यमनन्तरम्। ताराङ्गदाभ्यां सहितो वालिनो दहनं प्रति॥

kuru tvamasya sugrīva pretakāryamanantaram| tārāṅgadābhyāṃ sahito vālino dahanaṃ prati||

Sugrīva, do you perform the funeral ceremonies of Vali along with Tārā and Angada.

समाज्ञापय काष्ठानि शुष्काणि च बहूनि च। चन्दनानि च दिव्यानि वालिसंस्कारकारणात्॥

samājñāpaya kāṣṭhāni śuṣkāṇi ca bahūni ca| candanāni ca divyāni vālisaṃskārakāraṇāt||

Do you collect for cremation many a dry fuel and celestial sandal.

समाश्वासय दीनं त्वमङ्गदं दीनचेतसम्। मा भूर्बालिशबुद्धिस्त्वं त्वदधीनमिदं पुरम्॥

samāśvāsaya dīnaṃ tvamaṅgadaṃ dīnacetasam| mā bhūrbāliśabuddhistvaṃ tvadadhīnamidaṃ puram||

Do you console the unfortunate Angada, who is beside himself with grief. Do not conduct yourself like an ignorant person, for this city is now under you.

अङ्गदस्त्वानयेन्माल्यं वस्त्राणि विविधानि च। घृतं तैलमथो गन्धान् यच्चात्र समनन्तरम्॥

aṅgadastvānayenmālyaṃ vastrāṇi vividhāni ca| ghṛtaṃ tailamatho gandhān yaccātra samanantaram||

Let Angada bring clothes, garlands, scents, clarified butter, oil and other necessary articles.

त्वं तार शिबिकां शीघ्रमादायागच्छ सम्भ्रमात्। त्वरा गुणवती युक्ता ह्यस्मिन् काले विशेषतः॥

tvaṃ tāra śibikāṃ śīghramādāyāgaccha sambhramāt| tvarā guṇavatī yuktā hyasmin kāle viśeṣataḥ||

O Tārā, do you go and bring soon a conveyance; for speediness is a special virtue on an occasion like this.

सज्जीभवन्तु प्लवगाः शिबिकावाहनोचिताः। समर्था बलिनश्चैव निहरिष्यन्ति वालिनम्॥

sajjībhavantu plavagāḥ śibikāvāhanocitāḥ| samarthā balinaścaiva nihariṣyanti vālinam||

Let the monkeys dress themselves who can convey this hearse. The powerful and the capable only shall carry Vali.

एवमुक्त्वा तु सुग्रीवं सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः। तस्थौ भ्रातृसमीपस्थो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा॥

evamuktvā tu sugrīvaṃ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ| tasthau bhrātṛsamīpastho lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā||

Having thus addressed Sugriva, Laksmana, the enhancer of Sumitrā's joy and the destroyer of foes, stood before his elder brother.

लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा तारः सम्भ्रान्तमानसः। प्रविवेश गुहां शीघ्रं शिबिकासक्तमानसः॥

lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā tāraḥ sambhrāntamānasaḥ| praviveśa guhāṃ śīghraṃ śibikāsaktamānasaḥ||

And hearing the words of Laksmana, the counsellor respectfully entered the cave with a view to bring the conveyance.

आदाय शिबिकां तारः स तु पर्यापतत् पुनः। वानरैरुह्यमानां तां शूरैरुद्वनोचितैः॥

ādāya śibikāṃ tāraḥ sa tu paryāpatat punaḥ| vānarairuhyamānāṃ tāṃ śūrairudvanocitaiḥ||

And taking that conveyance carried by the monkeys and worthy of being carried by the heroes, he issued out again of the cave.

दिव्यां भद्रासनयुतां शिबिकां स्यन्दनोपमाम्। पक्षिकर्मभिराचित्रां दुमकर्मविभूषिताम् ॥

divyāṃ bhadrāsanayutāṃ śibikāṃ syandanopamām| pakṣikarmabhirācitrāṃ dumakarmavibhūṣitām ||

It had a celestial throne and was like to a warchariot and had trees and birds painted on it.

आचितां चित्रपत्तीभिः सुनिविष्टां समन्ततः। विमानमिव सिद्धानां जालवातायनायुताम्॥

ācitāṃ citrapattībhiḥ suniviṣṭāṃ samantataḥ| vimānamiva siddhānāṃ jālavātāyanāyutām||

It was painted on all sides with the figures of foot soldiers, had latticed windows and was like to the car of the Siddhas-spacious and artistically and stoutly built by artizans with beautiful carvings like to a wooden hill.

सुनियुक्तां विशालां च सुकृतां शिल्पिभिः कृताम्। दारुपर्वतकोपेतां चारुकर्मपरिष्कृताम्॥ वराभरणहारैश्च चित्रमाल्योपशोभिताम्। गुहागहनसंछन्नां रक्तचन्दनभूषिताम् ॥

suniyuktāṃ viśālāṃ ca sukṛtāṃ śilpibhiḥ kṛtām| dāruparvatakopetāṃ cārukarmapariṣkṛtām|| varābharaṇahāraiśca citramālyopaśobhitām| guhāgahanasaṃchannāṃ raktacandanabhūṣitām ||

It was ornamented with excellent ornaments and beautiful garlands, sprinkled with red sandal and skirted with strong ribs.

पुष्पोषैः समभिच्छन्नां पद्ममालाभिरेव च। तरुणादित्यवर्णाभिमा॑जमानाभिरावृताम्॥

puṣpoṣaiḥ samabhicchannāṃ padmamālābhireva ca| taruṇādityavarṇābhimā̭jamānābhirāvṛtām||

It was covered with flowers and lotus garlands, crusted with precious clothes and had the colour of the rising Sun.

ईदृशी शिबिकां दृष्ट्वा रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्। क्षिप्रं विनीयतां वाली प्रेतकार्यं विधीयताम्॥

īdṛśī śibikāṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt| kṣipraṃ vinīyatāṃ vālī pretakāryaṃ vidhīyatām||

Beholding such a conveyance, Rāma spoke to Lakşmaņa, saying-Do you soon conduct the funeral service of Vāli,

ततो वालिनमुद्यम्य सुग्रीवः शिबिकां तदा। आरोपयत विक्रोशनङ्गदेन सहैव तु॥

tato vālinamudyamya sugrīvaḥ śibikāṃ tadā| āropayata vikrośanaṅgadena sahaiva tu||

Thereupon Sugrīva, long with Angada, placing Väli on the conveyance, began to bewail.

आरोग्य शिबिकां चैव वालिनं गतजीवितम्। अलंकारैश्च विविधैर्माल्यैर्वस्त्रैश्च भूषितम्॥

ārogya śibikāṃ caiva vālinaṃ gatajīvitam| alaṃkāraiśca vividhairmālyairvastraiśca bhūṣitam||

And placing the lifeless body of Vāli on it, he covered it with various ornaments, garlands, and clothes.

आज्ञापयत् तदा राजा सुग्रीवः प्लवगेश्वरः। और्ध्वदेहीकमार्यस्य क्रियतामनुकूलतः॥

ājñāpayat tadā rājā sugrīvaḥ plavageśvaraḥ| aurdhvadehīkamāryasya kriyatāmanukūlataḥ||

Thereat Sugrīva, the king of monkeys, ordered for the performance of Vāli's funeral rites.

विश्राणयन्तो रत्नानि विविधानि बहूनि च। अग्रतः प्लवगा यान्तु शिबिका तदनन्तरम्॥

viśrāṇayanto ratnāni vividhāni bahūni ca| agrataḥ plavagā yāntu śibikā tadanantaram||

Let the monkeys go before, scattering many a precious jewel and let the conveyance follow them.

राज्ञामृद्धिविशेषा हि दृश्यन्ते भुवि यादृशाः। तादृशैरिह कुर्वन्तु वानरा भर्तृसत्क्रियाम्॥

rājñāmṛddhiviśeṣā hi dṛśyante bhuvi yādṛśāḥ| tādṛśairiha kurvantu vānarā bhartṛsatkriyām||

Let the monkeys perform the obsequies of our master with such grandeur as befits the riches of the kings on this earth, a

तादृशं वालिनः क्षिप्रं प्राकुर्वन्नौदेहिकम्। अङ्गदं परिरभ्याशु तारप्रभृतयस्तथा॥

tādṛśaṃ vālinaḥ kṣipraṃ prākurvannaudehikam| aṅgadaṃ parirabhyāśu tāraprabhṛtayastathā||

With view to perform the funeral ceremonies of Vāli, the counsellors and other monkeys, having lost their king and embraced Angada, proceeded weeping.

क्रोशन्तः प्रययुः सर्वे वानरा हतबान्धवाः। ततः प्रणिहीताः सर्वा वानर्योऽस्य वशानुगाः॥ चुक्रुशुर्वीरवीरेति भूयः क्रोशन्ति ताः प्रियम्। ताराप्रभृतयः सर्वा वानर्यो हतबान्धवाः॥ अनुजग्मुश्च भर्तारं क्रोशन्त्यः करुणस्वनाः।

krośantaḥ prayayuḥ sarve vānarā hatabāndhavāḥ| tataḥ praṇihītāḥ sarvā vānaryo'sya vaśānugāḥ|| cukruśurvīravīreti bhūyaḥ krośanti tāḥ priyam| tārāprabhṛtayaḥ sarvā vānaryo hatabāndhavāḥ|| anujagmuśca bhartāraṃ krośantyaḥ karuṇasvanāḥ|

And other subject monkeys followed them. And all other she-monkeys, headed by Tārā, having lost their lord, bewailed, exclaiming again and again-O hero, O hero. And they, thus bewailing piteously, followed their lord.

तासां रुदितशब्देन वानरीणां वनान्तरे॥ वनानि गिरयश्चैव विक्रोशन्तीव सर्वतः।

tāsāṃ ruditaśabdena vānarīṇāṃ vanāntare|| vanāni girayaścaiva vikrośantīva sarvataḥ|

In response to the bewailings of she-monkeys, hills and forests, as if, bewailed on all sides.

पुलिने गिरिनद्यास्तु विविक्ते जलसंवृते॥ चितां चक्रुः सुबहवो वानरा वनचारिणः। अवरोप्य ततः स्कन्धाच्छिबिकां वानरोत्तमाः॥

puline girinadyāstu vivikte jalasaṃvṛte|| citāṃ cakruḥ subahavo vānarā vanacāriṇaḥ| avaropya tataḥ skandhācchibikāṃ vānarottamāḥ||

Monkeys, ranging in the forest, made funeral piles on the banks of the hill-streams and in solitary watery nooks. Thereupon laying down from their shoulders the conveyance, those foremost of monkeys stationed themselves in a corner, being stricken with grief.

तस्थुरेकान्तमाश्रित्य सर्वे शोकपरायणाः। ततस्तारा पतिं दृष्ट्वा शिबिकातलशायिनम्॥ आरोप्याङ्के शिरस्तस्य विललाप सुदुःखिता।

tasthurekāntamāśritya sarve śokaparāyaṇāḥ| tatastārā patiṃ dṛṣṭvā śibikātalaśāyinam|| āropyāṅke śirastasya vilalāpa suduḥkhitā|

And Tārā, beholding her husband's body on the conveyance, placed his head on her lap and bewailed, overwhelmed with griet.

हा वानरमहाराज हा नाथ पम वत्सल। ४०।। हा महार्ह महाबाहो हा मम प्रिय पश्य माम्। जनं न पश्यसीमं त्वं कस्माच्छोकाभिपीडितम्॥

hā vānaramahārāja hā nātha pama vatsala| 40|| hā mahārha mahābāho hā mama priya paśya mām| janaṃ na paśyasīmaṃ tvaṃ kasmācchokābhipīḍitam||

O lord of monkeys! O my lord! O my dear one! O you used to luxuries! Oyou having long arms! O my darling! behold me. Why did you not behold these monkeys, racked with sorrow?

प्रहृष्टमिह ते वक्त्रं गतासोरपि मानद। अस्तार्कसमवर्णं च दृश्यते जीवतो यथा॥

prahṛṣṭamiha te vaktraṃ gatāsorapi mānada| astārkasamavarṇaṃ ca dṛśyate jīvato yathā||

O conferrer of honours, your countenance looks as if beaming with joy; although you are dead, and you appearest as if alive, having the hue of the setting Sun.

एष त्वां रामरूपेण लालः कर्षति वानर। येन स्म विधवाः सर्वाः कृता एकेषुणा रणे॥

eṣa tvāṃ rāmarūpeṇa lālaḥ karṣati vānara| yena sma vidhavāḥ sarvāḥ kṛtā ekeṣuṇā raṇe||

O monkey, Death himself, under the semblance of Rāma, is attracting you, who with one shaft in the battle, has rendered us all widows.

इमास्तास्तव राजेन्द्र वानर्योऽप्लवगास्तव। पादैर्विकृष्टमध्वानमागताः किं न बुध्यसे॥

imāstāstava rājendra vānaryo'plavagāstava| pādairvikṛṣṭamadhvānamāgatāḥ kiṃ na budhyase||

O best of kings, these she-monkeys cannot go by jumping. Did you not perceive that they have travelled so far on foot?

तवेष्टा ननु चैवेमा भार्याश्चन्द्रनिभाननाः। इदानीं नेक्षसे कस्मात सुग्रीवं प्लवगेश्वर ॥

taveṣṭā nanu caivemā bhāryāścandranibhānanāḥ| idānīṃ nekṣase kasmāta sugrīvaṃ plavageśvara ||

Those your wives, having moon-like countenances, have always your welfare in view. Why did you not, O best of monkeys, cast your looks towards them and Sugrīva?

एते हि सचिवा राजस्तारप्रभृतयस्तव। पुरवासिजनश्चायं परिवार्य विषीदति॥

ete hi sacivā rājastāraprabhṛtayastava| puravāsijanaścāyaṃ parivārya viṣīdati||

O king, these your counsellors, your wives headed by Tårā, and all these citizens are bewailing around you.

विसर्जयनान् सचिवान् यथापुरमरिंदम। ततः क्रीडामहे सर्वा वनेषु मदनोत्कटाः॥

visarjayanān sacivān yathāpuramariṃdama| tataḥ krīḍāmahe sarvā vaneṣu madanotkaṭāḥ||

O slayer of foes, do you despatch your counsellors to the city and we shall all enjoy in this forest, excited with amour.

एवं विलपती तारां पतिशोकपरिवृताम्। उत्थापयन्ति स्म तदा वानर्यः शोककर्शिताः। ४८।।

evaṃ vilapatī tārāṃ patiśokaparivṛtām| utthāpayanti sma tadā vānaryaḥ śokakarśitāḥ| 48||

The other she-monkeys, worked with sorrow, raised up Tārā bewailing thus being exercised with grief consequent upon the demise of her husband.

सुग्रीवेण ततः सार्धं सोऽङ्गदः पितरं रुदन्। चितामारोपयामास शोकेनाभिप्लुतेन्द्रियः॥

sugrīveṇa tataḥ sārdhaṃ so'ṅgadaḥ pitaraṃ rudan| citāmāropayāmāsa śokenābhiplutendriyaḥ||

Thereupon Angada along with Sugrīva, overwhelmed with grief, weeping, placed his Sire's body on the funeral pile.

ततोऽग्नि विधिवद् दत्वा सोऽपसव्यं चकार ह। पितरं दीर्घमध्वानं प्रस्थितं व्याकुलेन्द्रियः॥

tato'gni vidhivad datvā so'pasavyaṃ cakāra ha| pitaraṃ dīrghamadhvānaṃ prasthitaṃ vyākulendriyaḥ||

And putting fire duly, he circumambulated his Sire, bound for a journey for good.

संस्कृत्य वालिनं तु विधिवत् प्लवगर्षभाः। आजग्मुरुदकं कर्तुं नदी शुभजलां शिवाम् ॥

saṃskṛtya vālinaṃ tu vidhivat plavagarṣabhāḥ| ājagmurudakaṃ kartuṃ nadī śubhajalāṃ śivām ||

Having duly cremated Vāli's body, the foremost of monkeys arrived at a river of auspicious water with a view to perform the watery ceremony.

ततस्ते सहितास्तत्र ह्यङ्गदं स्थाप्य चाग्रतः। सुग्रीवतारासहिताः सिषिचुनिरा जलम्॥

tataste sahitāstatra hyaṅgadaṃ sthāpya cāgrataḥ| sugrīvatārāsahitāḥ siṣicunirā jalam||

And all these monkeys along with Sugrīva and Tārā, placing Angada before them, sprinkled water.

सुग्रीवेणेव दीनेन दीनो भूत्वा महाबलः। समानशोकः काकुत्स्थः प्रेतकार्याण्यकारयत्॥

sugrīveṇeva dīnena dīno bhūtvā mahābalaḥ| samānaśokaḥ kākutsthaḥ pretakāryāṇyakārayat||

And the highly powerful Käkutstha, equally aggrieved like Sugriva, being as poorly, conducted duly the obsequious ceremonies of Vali.

ततोऽथ तं वालिनमग्र्यपौरुषं प्रकाशमिक्ष्वाकुवरेषुणा हतम्। प्रदीप्य दीप्ताग्निसमौजसं तदा सलक्ष्मणं राममुपेयिवान् हरिः॥

tato'tha taṃ vālinamagryapauruṣaṃ prakāśamikṣvākuvareṣuṇā hatam| pradīpya dīptāgnisamaujasaṃ tadā salakṣmaṇaṃ rāmamupeyivān hariḥ||

Thereupon cremating Våli, gifted with unequalled prowess, slain with one shaft of the foremost of Ikṣwakus, and like to flaming fire, Sugrīva appeared before Rāma who was in the company of Laksmana.
