तामाशु वेगेन दुरासदेन त्वभिप्लुतां शोकमहार्णवेन। पश्यंस्तदा वाल्यनुजस्तरस्वी भ्रातुर्वधेनाप्रतिमेन तेपे॥
tāmāśu vegena durāsadena tvabhiplutāṃ śokamahārṇavena| paśyaṃstadā vālyanujastarasvī bhrāturvadhenāpratimena tepe||
Beholding Tārā emerged in a deep and mighty ocean of grief, Vali's younger brother was overwhelmed with penitence, in consequence of the unbecoming destruction of his brother.

स वाष्पपूर्णेन मुखेन पश्यन् क्षणेन निर्विण्णमना मनस्वी। जगाम रामस्य शनैः समीपं भृत्यैर्वृतः सम्परिदूयमानः॥
sa vāṣpapūrṇena mukhena paśyan kṣaṇena nirviṇṇamanā manasvī| jagāma rāmasya śanaiḥ samīpaṃ bhṛtyairvṛtaḥ samparidūyamānaḥ||
And seeing her countenance full of tears, the high-souled (Sugriva), racked with grief and repentance, approached slowly Ráma along with his followers.

मुदात्तमाशीविषतुल्यबाणम्। मवस्थितं राघवमित्युवाच ॥
mudāttamāśīviṣatulyabāṇam| mavasthitaṃ rāghavamityuvāca ||
And nearing him, with a bow in his hand, having arrows like to serpents, famed and having auspicious marks on his person, he spoke to Rāghava, seated there, saying.

यथा प्रतिज्ञामिदं नरेन्द्र कृतं त्वया दृष्टफलं च कर्म। ममाद्य भोगेषु नरेन्द्रसूनो मनो निवृत्तं हतजीवितेन॥
yathā pratijñāmidaṃ narendra kṛtaṃ tvayā dṛṣṭaphalaṃ ca karma| mamādya bhogeṣu narendrasūno mano nivṛttaṃ hatajīvitena||
O lord of men, you had fulfilled your promise by carrying it out into practice; and as for wretched me, O son of a king, I shall refrain today from all enjoyments.

अस्यां महिष्यां तु भृशं रुदत्यां पुरेऽतिविक्रोशति दुःखतप्ते। हते नृपे संशयितेऽङ्गदे च न राम राज्ये रमते मनो मे।।
asyāṃ mahiṣyāṃ tu bhṛśaṃ rudatyāṃ pure'tivikrośati duḥkhatapte| hate nṛpe saṃśayite'ṅgade ca na rāma rājye ramate mano me||
This queen lamenting piteously, these subjects and retinue bewailing, being overwhelmed with grief, this king being slain, how can kingdom please me.?

क्रोधादमर्षादतिविप्रधर्षाद् भ्रातुर्वधो मेऽनुमतः पुरस्तात्। हते त्विदानी हरियूथपेऽस्मिन् सुतीक्ष्णमिक्ष्वाकुवर प्रतप्स्ये॥
krodhādamarṣādativipradharṣād bhrāturvadho me'numataḥ purastāt| hate tvidānī hariyūthape'smin sutīkṣṇamikṣvākuvara pratapsye||
O Rāma out of anger, and passion, and on account of my being insulted by him, I did formerly desire to bring about my brother's destruction. But that lord of monkey-herds being shain, O best of lkswakus, I am truly pierced to the quick with anguish.

श्रेयोऽद्य मन्ये मम शैलमुख्ये तस्मिन् हि वासश्चिरमृष्यमूके। यथा तथा वर्तयतः स्ववृत्या नेमं निहत्य त्रिदिवस्य लाभः॥
śreyo'dya manye mama śailamukhye tasmin hi vāsaściramṛṣyamūke| yathā tathā vartayataḥ svavṛtyā nemaṃ nihatya tridivasya lābhaḥ||
I do prefer living for good in the mount Rșyamūka, earning my livelihood somehow or other, to the accession of heaven by destroying (Vāli).

मयं महात्मा मतिमानुवाच। मिदं वचः कर्म च मेऽनुरूपम्॥
mayaṃ mahātmā matimānuvāca| midaṃ vacaḥ karma ca me'nurūpam||
This highly intellectual and high-souled one spoke to me Do you range at large, I do not wish to destroy you. Such words were really becoming of him, O Rāma. And these words and this action become me (vile as I am).

भ्राता कथं नाम महागुणस्य भ्रातुर्वधं राम विरोचयेत। राज्यस्य दुःखस्य च वीर सारं विचिन्तयन्कामपुरस्कृतोऽपि॥
bhrātā kathaṃ nāma mahāguṇasya bhrāturvadhaṃ rāma virocayeta| rājyasya duḥkhasya ca vīra sāraṃ vicintayankāmapuraskṛto'pi||
How can a brother, O Rāma, however avaricious he might be, relish the destruction of his qualified brother, comparing the happiness of a kingdom, with the grief (consequent upon his brother's demise)?

वधो हि मतो नासीत् स्वमाहात्म्यव्यतिक्रमात्। ममासीद् बुद्धिदौरात्म्यात् प्राणहारी व्यतिक्रमः॥
vadho hi mato nāsīt svamāhātmyavyatikramāt| mamāsīd buddhidaurātmyāt prāṇahārī vyatikramaḥ||
He did not desire to slay me, lest his greatness inight be spoiled; but alas! through my wicked sense, I performed an iniquity by taking the life of my brother.

दुमशाखावभग्नोऽहं मुहूर्तं परिनिष्टनन्। सान्त्वयित्वा त्वनेनोक्तो न पुनः कर्तुमर्हसि ॥
dumaśākhāvabhagno'haṃ muhūrtaṃ pariniṣṭanan| sāntvayitvā tvanenokto na punaḥ kartumarhasi ||
Being struck by him with branches of trees, while I fled away and wept, he, consoling me, said only Do not do this again.

भ्रातृत्वमार्यभावश्च धर्मश्चानेन रक्षितः। मया क्रोधश्च कामश्च कपित्वं च प्रदर्शितम्॥
bhrātṛtvamāryabhāvaśca dharmaścānena rakṣitaḥ| mayā krodhaśca kāmaśca kapitvaṃ ca pradarśitam||
He all along maintained his fraternal feelings, his honesty and piety; but (woe to me) I have displayed my wrath, passion and monkey-hood.

मनीप्सनीयं स्वनवेक्षणीयम्। प्राप्तोऽस्मि पाप्मानमिदं वयस्य भ्रातुर्वधात् त्वाष्ट्रवधादिवेन्द्रः॥
manīpsanīyaṃ svanavekṣaṇīyam| prāpto'smi pāpmānamidaṃ vayasya bhrāturvadhāt tvāṣṭravadhādivendraḥ||
O friend, like to the lord of celestials perpetrating sin by destroying Biswarupa, I have been, by bringing about the destruction of my brother, visited. with this sin, beyond comprehensio”, avoidable, undesirable and invisible.

पाप्मानमिन्द्रस्य मही जलं च वृक्षाश्च कामं जगृहुः स्त्रियश्च। को नाम पाप्मानमिमं सहेत शाखामृगस्य प्रतिपत्तुमिच्छेत्॥
pāpmānamindrasya mahī jalaṃ ca vṛkṣāśca kāmaṃ jagṛhuḥ striyaśca| ko nāma pāpmānamimaṃ saheta śākhāmṛgasya pratipattumicchet||
Indra's sin was shared by earth, water, trees and women; but who is there who will bear and desire to participate this monkey's sin?-

नार्हामि सम्मानमिमं प्रजानां न यौवराज्यं कुत एव राज्यम्। मेवंविधं राघव कर्म कृत्वा ॥
nārhāmi sammānamimaṃ prajānāṃ na yauvarājyaṃ kuta eva rājyam| mevaṃvidhaṃ rāghava karma kṛtvā ||
Perpetrating such an improper and irreligious act, tending to the decay of my family, I do not deserve the respect of my subjects and the heirapparentship; what of kingdom, O Rāghava.

पापस्य कर्तास्मि विगर्हितस्य क्षुद्रस्य लोकापकृतस्य लोके। शोको महान् मामभिवर्ततेऽयं वृष्टेर्यथा निम्नमिवाम्बुवेगः॥
pāpasya kartāsmi vigarhitasya kṣudrasya lokāpakṛtasya loke| śoko mahān māmabhivartate'yaṃ vṛṣṭeryathā nimnamivāmbuvegaḥ||
I am the perpetrator of a vile and disgraceful sin, blamed of all in this world. And like to a current of rain going downwards, this mighty grief has overcome me.

सोदर्यघातापरगाववालः संतापहस्ताक्षिशिरोविषाणः। एनोमयो मामभिहन्ति हस्ती दृप्तो नदीकूलमिव प्रवृद्धः॥
sodaryaghātāparagāvavālaḥ saṃtāpahastākṣiśiroviṣāṇaḥ| enomayo māmabhihanti hastī dṛpto nadīkūlamiva pravṛddhaḥ||
This mighty and infuriated elephant of a sin, having the destruction of a brother as its body, repentance, as its trunk, head, eyes and tusks, has been crushing me like to the banks of a river.

अंहो वतेदं नृवराविषह्यं निवर्तते मे हृदि साधुवृत्तम्। अग्नौ विवर्णं परितप्यमानं किट्टं यथा राघव जातरूपम्॥
aṃho vatedaṃ nṛvarāviṣahyaṃ nivartate me hṛdi sādhuvṛttam| agnau vivarṇaṃ paritapyamānaṃ kiṭṭaṃ yathā rāghava jātarūpam||
Alas! O best of kings, this unbearable sin has been driving away all pious feelings from my heart like to alloy leaking out of discoloured gold when molten in fire, O Rāghava.

मिदं कुलं राघव मनिमित्तम्। दर्धस्थितप्राणमितीव मन्ये॥
midaṃ kulaṃ rāghava manimittam| dardhasthitaprāṇamitīva manye||
Methinks, for me, O Rāghava, these mighty monkeys and Angada are almost half-dead (with grief).

सुतः सुलभ्यः सुजनः सुवश्यः कुतस्तु पुत्रः सदृशोऽङ्गदेन। न चापि विद्येत स वीर देशो यस्मिन् भवेत् सोदरसंनिकर्षः॥
sutaḥ sulabhyaḥ sujanaḥ suvaśyaḥ kutastu putraḥ sadṛśo'ṅgadena| na cāpi vidyeta sa vīra deśo yasmin bhavet sodarasaṃnikarṣaḥ||
A good-natured and obedient son is rare. Where is to be found Angada's equal? O hero, there is no such land where I may meet again my brother.

जीवेत माता परिपालनार्थम्। विना तु पुत्रं परितापदीना सा नैव जीवेदिति निश्चितं मे॥
jīveta mātā paripālanārtham| vinā tu putraṃ paritāpadīnā sā naiva jīvediti niścitaṃ me||
The heroic Angada shall not live to-day and if he lives, his another shall live to bring him up. Forsooth, without her son, she shall not live long.

सोऽहं प्रवेक्ष्याम्यतिदीप्तमग्नि भ्रात्रा च पुत्रेण च सख्यमिच्छन्। इमे विचेष्यन्ति हरिप्रवीराः सीतां निदेशे परिवर्तमानाः॥
so'haṃ pravekṣyāmyatidīptamagni bhrātrā ca putreṇa ca sakhyamicchan| ime viceṣyanti haripravīrāḥ sītāṃ nideśe parivartamānāḥ||
Therefore shall I enter this flaming fire with a view to place myself on the same level with my brother and his son and all these mighty monkeys shall engage in quest of Sītā, abiding by your commandments.

न्मय्यप्यतीते मनुजेन्द्रपुत्र। कुलस्य हन्तारमजीवना रामानुजानीहि कृतागसं माम्॥
nmayyapyatīte manujendraputra| kulasya hantāramajīvanā rāmānujānīhi kṛtāgasaṃ mām||
O son of a king, they shall all carry out your orders even in my absence, do you, therefore, order me (to enter fire) who am the destroyer of my own race, have performed an inequity and do not deserve living any more.

इत्येवमार्तस्य रघुप्रवीरः श्रुत्वा वचो वालिजघन्यजस्य। संजातवाष्पः परवीरहन्ता रामो मुहूर्तं विमना बभूव ॥
ityevamārtasya raghupravīraḥ śrutvā vaco vālijaghanyajasya| saṃjātavāṣpaḥ paravīrahantā rāmo muhūrtaṃ vimanā babhūva ||
Hearing the words of Vali's younger brother, who was bewailing thus, Rāma, the heroic descendant of Rāghu and the slayer of foes, remained stupefied for some time with tears in his eyes.

तस्मिन् क्षणेऽभीक्ष्णमवेक्षमाणः क्षितिक्षमावान् भुवनस्य गोप्ता। रामो रुदन्ती व्यसने निमग्नां समुत्सुकः सोऽथ ददर्श ताराम्॥
tasmin kṣaṇe'bhīkṣṇamavekṣamāṇaḥ kṣitikṣamāvān bhuvanasya goptā| rāmo rudantī vyasane nimagnāṃ samutsukaḥ so'tha dadarśa tārām||
In the mean-time, Rāma patient like to the protector of the world, worked with curiosity looked again and again towards the bewailing Tārā sunk in the gulf of disaster.

तां चारुनेत्रां कपिसिंहनाथां पतिं समाश्लिष्य तदा शयानाम्। उत्थापयामासुरदीनसत्त्वां मन्त्रिप्रधानाः कपिराजपत्नीम्।।
tāṃ cārunetrāṃ kapisiṃhanāthāṃ patiṃ samāśliṣya tadā śayānām| utthāpayāmāsuradīnasattvāṃ mantripradhānāḥ kapirājapatnīm||
Thereupon the principal counsellors raised up the brave spouse of the lord of monkeys, having graceful eyes and lying on the earth, embracing her husband.

सा विस्फुरन्ती परिरभ्यमाणा भर्तुः समीपादपनीयमाना। ददर्श राम शरचापपाणिं स्वतेजसा सूर्यमिव ज्वलन्तम्॥
sā visphurantī parirabhyamāṇā bhartuḥ samīpādapanīyamānā| dadarśa rāma śaracāpapāṇiṃ svatejasā sūryamiva jvalantam||
And snatched away from her husband and trembling, she beheld Rāma, with bow and arrows in his hand burning like to the Sun by virtue of his own effulgence.

सुसंवृतं पार्थिवलक्षणैश्च तं चारुनेत्रं मृगशावनेत्रा। मयं स काकुत्स्थ इति प्रजज्ञे॥
susaṃvṛtaṃ pārthivalakṣaṇaiśca taṃ cārunetraṃ mṛgaśāvanetrā| mayaṃ sa kākutstha iti prajajñe||
Beholding him gifted with all royal marks, having beautiful eyes and never seen before, that one, having the eyes of a fawn, thought within herself. This great one must be Kākutstha.

तस्येन्द्रकल्पस्य दुरासदस्य महानुभावस्य समीपमार्या। आर्ताऽतितूर्णं व्यसनं प्रपन्ना जगाम तारा परिविह्वलन्ती॥
tasyendrakalpasya durāsadasya mahānubhāvasya samīpamāryā| ārtā'titūrṇaṃ vyasanaṃ prapannā jagāma tārā parivihvalantī||
The worshipful Tārā, worked with grief, and overwhelmed with disasters, bewailing, neared quickly that high-souled one, resembling the lord of celestials and hard to approach.

तं सा समासाद्य विशुद्धसत्त्वं शोकेन सम्भ्रान्तशरीरभावा। मनस्विनी वाक्यमुवाच तारा रामं रणोत्कर्षणलब्धलक्ष्यम्॥
taṃ sā samāsādya viśuddhasattvaṃ śokena sambhrāntaśarīrabhāvā| manasvinī vākyamuvāca tārā rāmaṃ raṇotkarṣaṇalabdhalakṣyam||
And having reached the pure-souled Rāma, who had his ends fully attained in battle, the high-minded Tārā, having her frame worked with grief, spoke to him, saying.

त्वमप्रमेयश्च दुरासदश्च जितेन्द्रियश्चोत्तमधर्मकश्च। अक्षीणकीर्तिश्च विचक्षणश्च क्षितिक्षमावान् क्षतजोपमाक्षः॥
tvamaprameyaśca durāsadaśca jitendriyaścottamadharmakaśca| akṣīṇakīrtiśca vicakṣaṇaśca kṣitikṣamāvān kṣatajopamākṣaḥ||
You are immeasurable, hard to approach, highly pious, prudent of controlled senses and increasing fame, forgiving like to earth and of blood-red eyes.

महाबलः संहननोपपन्नः। मनुष्यदेहाभ्युदयं विहाय दिव्येन देहाभ्युदयेन युक्तः॥
mahābalaḥ saṃhananopapannaḥ| manuṣyadehābhyudayaṃ vihāya divyena dehābhyudayena yuktaḥ||
You have bow and arrows in hand, are highly powerful and of a tough body. And renouncing human grace you had assumed the grace of a celestial person.

येनैव बाणेन हतः प्रियो मे तेनैव बाणेन हि मां जहीहि । हता गमिष्यामि समीपमस्य न मां विना वीर रमेत वाली॥
yenaiva bāṇena hataḥ priyo me tenaiva bāṇena hi māṃ jahīhi | hatā gamiṣyāmi samīpamasya na māṃ vinā vīra rameta vālī||
Do you slay me with that self-same shaft with which my dear one was slain. And thus slain, O hero, I shall near him, for Vāli does not relish the company of any other woman but me.

स्वर्गेऽपि पद्मामलपत्रनेत्र समेत्य सम्प्रेक्ष्य च मामपश्यन्। न ह्येष उच्चावचताम्रचूडा विचित्रवेषाप्यसोऽभजिष्यत्॥
svarge'pi padmāmalapatranetra sametya samprekṣya ca māmapaśyan| na hyeṣa uccāvacatāmracūḍā vicitraveṣāpyaso'bhajiṣyat||
O you having eyes resembling clean lotuspetals, this (hero) departing to the abode of celestials and not beholding me there, shall not delight in the company of Apsarās, wearing diversified garments and copper-coloured coronets.

स्वर्गेऽपि शोकं च विवर्णतां च मया विना प्राप्स्यति वीर वाली। रम्ये नगेन्द्रस्य तटावकाशे विदेहकन्यारहितो यथा त्वम्॥
svarge'pi śokaṃ ca vivarṇatāṃ ca mayā vinā prāpsyati vīra vālī| ramye nagendrasya taṭāvakāśe videhakanyārahito yathā tvam||
Even in the land of celestials, O hero, Vāli shall turn pale with grief in my separation, like to you in the picuresque dale of the Lord of mountains, separated from the daughter of the king of Videha.

त्वं वेत्थ तावद् वनिताविहीनः प्राप्नोति दुःखं पुरुषः कुमारः। तत् त्वं प्रजानञ्जहि मां न वाली दुःखं ममादर्शनजं भजेत॥
tvaṃ vettha tāvad vanitāvihīnaḥ prāpnoti duḥkhaṃ puruṣaḥ kumāraḥ| tat tvaṃ prajānañjahi māṃ na vālī duḥkhaṃ mamādarśanajaṃ bhajeta||
You know well that a hand-some man is greatly afflicted with the separation of his spouse; and knowing this, do you slay me, and Vāli shall not be tormented with grief consequent upon my absence.

यच्चापि मन्येत भवान् महात्मा स्त्रीघातदोषस्तु भवेन मह्यम्। आत्मेयमस्येति हि मां जहि त्वं न स्त्रीवधः स्यान्मनुजेन्द्रपुत्र ॥
yaccāpi manyeta bhavān mahātmā strīghātadoṣastu bhavena mahyam| ātmeyamasyeti hi māṃ jahi tvaṃ na strīvadhaḥ syānmanujendraputra ||
High-souled as you are, you are thinking that you shall, slaying me, be visited with a sin arising from the destruction of a female. But do you kill me, O son of a king, knowing me as the soul of Vali, and you shall not be responsible for destroying a woman.

दनन्यरूपाः पुरुषस्य दाराः। दारप्रदानाद्धि न दानमन्यत् प्रदृश्यते ज्ञानवतां हि लोके ॥
dananyarūpāḥ puruṣasya dārāḥ| dārapradānāddhi na dānamanyat pradṛśyate jñānavatāṃ hi loke ||
According to the Vedas and various other sacred texts, wives are inseparably blended with their husbands. And the wise say that there is no other gift better than that of a wife in this world.

त्वं चापि मां तस्य मम प्रियस्य प्रदास्यसे धर्ममवेक्ष्य वीर। मधर्मयोगं मम वीर घातात्॥
tvaṃ cāpi māṃ tasya mama priyasya pradāsyase dharmamavekṣya vīra| madharmayogaṃ mama vīra ghātāt||
You shall, O hero, confer me religiously upon my dear one and by this gift you shall be saved from the sin consequent upon killing me.

मेवंगतां नार्हसि मामहन्तुम्। अहं हि मातङ्गविलासगामिना प्लवङ्गमानामृषभेण धीमता। विना वराहॊत्तमहेममालिना चिरं न शक्ष्यामि नरेन्द्र जीवितुम्॥
mevaṃgatāṃ nārhasi māmahantum| ahaṃ hi mātaṅgavilāsagāminā plavaṅgamānāmṛṣabheṇa dhīmatā| vinā varāhòttamahemamālinā ciraṃ na śakṣyāmi narendra jīvitum||
It does not behove you not to kill me, who am exercised with grief, without my lord, snatched away from him and reduced to such a (pitiable) plight. O lord of men, I cannot live long without that highly intelligent lord of monkeys, having an elephantine gait and wearing an excellent golden garland.

इत्येवमुक्तस्तु विभुर्महात्मा तारां समाश्वास्य हितं बभाषे। मा वीरभार्ये विमतिं कुरुष्व लोको हि सर्वो विहितो विधात्रा ॥
ityevamuktastu vibhurmahātmā tārāṃ samāśvāsya hitaṃ babhāṣe| mā vīrabhārye vimatiṃ kuruṣva loko hi sarvo vihito vidhātrā ||
Thus accosted, the high-souled lord consoling Tārā, spoke to her the following well-meaning words.–Do you not lose yourself, O wife of a hero. This whole world of creation is being guided by God's dispensation.

तं चैव सर्वं सुखदुःखयोगं लोकोऽब्रवीत् तेन कृतं विधात्रा। त्रयोऽपि लोका विहितं विधानं नातिक्रमन्ते वशगा हि तस्य॥
taṃ caiva sarvaṃ sukhaduḥkhayogaṃ loko'bravīt tena kṛtaṃ vidhātrā| trayo'pi lokā vihitaṃ vidhānaṃ nātikramante vaśagā hi tasya||
And by Him is administered misery or happiness as people say. These three worlds cannot neglect His dispensations and are entirely subject to Him.

प्रीतिं परां प्राप्स्यसि तां तथैव पुत्रश्च ते प्राप्स्यति यौवराज्यम्। धात्रा विधानं विहितं तथैव न शूरपत्न्यः परिदेवयन्ति॥
prītiṃ parāṃ prāpsyasi tāṃ tathaiva putraśca te prāpsyati yauvarājyam| dhātrā vidhānaṃ vihitaṃ tathaiva na śūrapatnyaḥ paridevayanti||
