उत्तरकाण्डः सर्गः 106

अवाङ्मुखोमथो दीनं दृष्ट्वा सोममिवाप्लुतम्। राघवं लक्ष्मणो वाक्यं हृष्टो मधुरमब्रवीत्॥

avāṅmukhomatho dīnaṃ dṛṣṭvā somamivāplutam| rāghavaṃ lakṣmaṇo vākyaṃ hṛṣṭo madhuramabravīt||

There upon beholding Räma with his head downwards and poorly like to the moon possessed by Rāhu, Lakşmaņa, delightedly and with sweet words, said.

न संतापं महाबाहो मदर्थं कर्तुमर्हसि। पूर्णनिर्माणबद्धा हि कालस्य गतिरीदृशी॥

na saṃtāpaṃ mahābāho madarthaṃ kartumarhasi| pūrṇanirmāṇabaddhā hi kālasya gatirīdṛśī||

Be not aggrieved for me, O you having mighty' arms. Such is the course of time; the movements of creatures are destined by their pristine actions, good or bad.

जहि मां सौम्य विस्रब्धं प्रतिज्ञां परिपालय। हीनप्रतिज्ञाः काकुत्स्थ प्रयान्ति नरकं नराः॥

jahi māṃ saumya visrabdhaṃ pratijñāṃ paripālaya| hīnapratijñāḥ kākutstha prayānti narakaṃ narāḥ||

O gentle one, do you satisfy your promise of slaying me without any hesitation. O Kakuthstha, those, who cannot carry out their promises, repair to hell.

यदि प्रीतिर्महाराज यद्यनुग्राह्यता मयि। जहि मां निर्विशङ्कस्त्वं धर्म वर्धय राघव॥

yadi prītirmahārāja yadyanugrāhyatā mayi| jahi māṃ nirviśaṅkastvaṃ dharma vardhaya rāghava||

O great king, if you have any love or affection for me, do you satisfy your promise by fearlessly slaying me.

लक्ष्मणेन तथोक्तस्तु रामः प्रचलितेन्द्रियः। मन्त्रिणः समुपानीय तथैव च पुरोधसः॥ अब्रवीच्च तदा वृत्तं तेषां मध्ये स राघवः। दुर्वासोऽभिगमं चैव प्रतिज्ञां तापसस्य च॥

lakṣmaṇena tathoktastu rāmaḥ pracalitendriyaḥ| mantriṇaḥ samupānīya tathaiva ca purodhasaḥ|| abravīcca tadā vṛttaṃ teṣāṃ madhye sa rāghavaḥ| durvāso'bhigamaṃ caiva pratijñāṃ tāpasasya ca||

Hearing those words of Lakşmaņa Rāma's mind was greatly moved. There upon having invited his priests and ministers there he communicated to them his priests and ministers there he communicated to them his promise and Durvasa's arrival.

तच्छुत्वा मन्त्रिणः सर्वे सोपाध्यायाः समासत। वसिष्ठस्तु महातेजा वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह॥

tacchutvā mantriṇaḥ sarve sopādhyāyāḥ samāsata| vasiṣṭhastu mahātejā vākyametaduvāca ha||

Hearing it the ministers and priests remained silent. There upon Vasistha, of unmitigated effulgence, said.

दृष्टमेतन्महाबाहो क्षयं ते रोमहर्षणम्। लक्ष्मणेन वियोगश्च तव राम महायशः॥

dṛṣṭametanmahābāho kṣayaṃ te romaharṣaṇam| lakṣmaṇena viyogaśca tava rāma mahāyaśaḥ||

O highly illustrious and mighty armed Rāma, I knew before by virtue of my asceticism, of this your present destruction and separation from Laksmana.

त्यजैनं बलवान्कालो मा प्रतिज्ञां वृथा कृथाः। प्रतिज्ञायां हि नष्टायां धर्मो हि विलयं व्रजेत्।।।।

tyajainaṃ balavānkālo mā pratijñāṃ vṛthā kṛthāḥ| pratijñāyāṃ hi naṣṭāyāṃ dharmo hi vilayaṃ vrajet||||

Time is powerful; do not falsify your promise. Promise not carried out brings on the destruction of virtue.

ततो धर्मे विनिष्टे तु त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्। सदेवर्षिगणं सर्व विनश्येत्तु न संशयः॥

tato dharme viniṣṭe tu trailokyaṃ sacarācaram| sadevarṣigaṇaṃ sarva vinaśyettu na saṃśayaḥ||

And on the wane of virtue, forsooth, the three worlds, with celestials, saints, mobile and immobile creations, shall be destroyed.

स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल त्रैलोक्यस्याभिपालनात्। लक्ष्मणेन विना चाद्य जगत्स्वस्थं कुरुष्व ह॥

sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla trailokyasyābhipālanāt| lakṣmaṇena vinā cādya jagatsvasthaṃ kuruṣva ha||

Therefore, O foremost of men, do you protect, the universe by suffering separation from Lakşmaņa, in the interest of the preservation of the three worlds.

तेषां तत्समवेतानां वाक्यं धर्मार्थसंहितम्। श्रुत्वा परिषदो मध्ये रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्॥

teṣāṃ tatsamavetānāṃ vākyaṃ dharmārthasaṃhitam| śrutvā pariṣado madhye rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt||

All other ministers and priests agreed with Vasistha's words. There upon hearing their moral counsels, Rama said to Lakşmaņa before the assembly.

विसर्जये त्वां सौमित्रे मा भूद्धर्मविपर्ययः। त्यागो वधो वा विहितः साधूनां ह्युभयं समम्॥

visarjaye tvāṃ saumitre mā bhūddharmaviparyayaḥ| tyāgo vadho vā vihitaḥ sādhūnāṃ hyubhayaṃ samam||

O Lakşmaņa, it is not proper to act against morality, I do therefore renounce you; for the pious hold that destruction and renunciation are all the same.

रामेण भाषिते वाक्ये बाष्पव्याकुलितेन्द्रियः। लक्ष्मणस्त्वरितः प्रायात्स्वगृहं न विवेश ह॥

rāmeṇa bhāṣite vākye bāṣpavyākulitendriyaḥ| lakṣmaṇastvaritaḥ prāyātsvagṛhaṃ na viveśa ha||

Răma saying this, Lakşmaņa did not go to his own house, but with eyes full of tears specially repaired therefrom.

स गत्वा सरयूतीरमुपस्पृश्य कृताञ्जलिः। निगृह्य सर्वस्रोतांसि निःश्वासं न मुमोच ह॥

sa gatvā sarayūtīramupaspṛśya kṛtāñjaliḥ| nigṛhya sarvasrotāṃsi niḥśvāsaṃ na mumoca ha||

Having reached the banks of Sarayů and rinsed his mouth he stood there with folded palms. And having obstructed all passages he did not breathe any more.

अनिःश्वसन्तं युक्तं तं सशक्राः साप्सरोगणाः। देवाः सर्षिगणाः सर्वे पुष्पैरभ्यकिरंस्तदा॥

aniḥśvasantaṃ yuktaṃ taṃ saśakrāḥ sāpsarogaṇāḥ| devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ sarve puṣpairabhyakiraṃstadā||

Laksmana, the younger brother of Rama, being thus engaged in penances, having obstructed his breath, Apsarās, Indra and other deities and Rsis showered flowers on him.

अदृश्यं सर्वमनुजैः सशरीरं महाबलम्। प्रगृह्य लक्ष्मणं शक्रस्त्रिदिवं संविवेश ह॥

adṛśyaṃ sarvamanujaiḥ saśarīraṃ mahābalam| pragṛhya lakṣmaṇaṃ śakrastridivaṃ saṃviveśa ha||

There upon beyond the sight of men, having taken the highly powerful Lakşmaņa within his body, the king of celestials entered his own city.

ततो विष्णोश्चतुर्भागमागतं सुरसत्तमाः। हृष्टाः प्रमुदिताः सर्वे पूजयन्ति स्म राघवम्॥

tato viṣṇoścaturbhāgamāgataṃ surasattamāḥ| hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve pūjayanti sma rāghavam||

There upon beholding Lakşmaņa, the fourth portion of Vişnu arrived at their city the celestials were greatly delighted and engaged in his worship.
