तपोबलहताज्ञात्वा वासिष्ठान् समहोदयान्। ऋषिमध्येमहातेजा विश्वामित्रोऽभ्यभाषत॥
tapobalahatājñātvā vāsiṣṭhān samahodayān| ṛṣimadhyemahātejā viśvāmitro'bhyabhāṣata||
And knowing (by virtue of his Yoga power) Vasiştha's sons together with Mahodaya as destroyed in consequence of his ascetic energy, the highly powerful Viśvāmitra said in the midst of the saints.

अयमिक्ष्वाकुदायादस्त्रिशङ्कुरिति विश्रुतः। धर्मिष्ठश्च वदान्यश्च मां चैव शरणं गतः॥ स्वेनानेन शरीरेण देवलोकजिगीषया। यथायं स्वशरीरेण देवलोकं गमिष्यति॥ तथा प्रवर्त्यतां यज्ञो भवद्भिश्च मया सह।
ayamikṣvākudāyādastriśaṅkuriti viśrutaḥ| dharmiṣṭhaśca vadānyaśca māṃ caiva śaraṇaṃ gataḥ|| svenānena śarīreṇa devalokajigīṣayā| yathāyaṃ svaśarīreṇa devalokaṃ gamiṣyati|| tathā pravartyatāṃ yajño bhavadbhiśca mayā saha|
This descendant of Ikşvāku, the famous Trišanku, is virtuous and munificent, and has taken refuge in me, with the view of attaining the celestial regions in his own person. Therefore do you engage with me in the sacrifice, so that he may bodily repair to heaven.

विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा सर्व एव महर्षयः॥ ऊचुः समेता सहसा धर्मा धर्मसंहितम्। अयं कुशिकदायादो मुनिः परमकोपनः॥ यदाह वचनं सम्यगेतत् कार्यं न संशयः।
viśvāmitravacaḥ śrutvā sarva eva maharṣayaḥ|| ūcuḥ sametā sahasā dharmā dharmasaṃhitam| ayaṃ kuśikadāyādo muniḥ paramakopanaḥ|| yadāha vacanaṃ samyagetat kāryaṃ na saṃśayaḥ|
Hearing Viśvāmitra's words, the pious Maharsis readily spoke in harmony with duty, saying, “This descendant of Kuśika is a highly irascible ascetic, therefore what he said should, without doubt, he performed.'

अग्निकल्पो हि भगवान् शापं दास्यति रोषतः॥ तस्मात् प्रवर्त्यतां यज्ञः सशरीरो यथा दिवि। गच्छेदिक्ष्वाकुदायादो विश्वामित्रस्य तेजसा॥
agnikalpo hi bhagavān śāpaṃ dāsyati roṣataḥ|| tasmāt pravartyatāṃ yajñaḥ saśarīro yathā divi| gacchedikṣvākudāyādo viśvāmitrasya tejasā||
The worshipful one is like to fire, and, if angered, may curse us. Therefore, let us engage in this sacrifice, so that Ikşvāku's descendant through the potency of Viśvāmitra way repair to heaven in person.

यतः प्रवर्त्यतां यज्ञः सर्वे समधितिष्ठतः। एवमुक्त्वा महर्षयः संजह्वस्ताः क्रियास्तदा॥
yataḥ pravartyatāṃ yajñaḥ sarve samadhitiṣṭhataḥ| evamuktvā maharṣayaḥ saṃjahvastāḥ kriyāstadā||
Then let us engage in this sacrifice. Saying this, sages entered the upon the ceremony.

याजकश्च महातेजा विश्वामित्रोऽभवत् क्रतौ। ऋत्विजश्चानुपूर्येण मन्त्रवन्मन्त्रकोविदाः॥ चक्रुः सर्वाणि कर्माणि यथाकल्पं यथाविधि।
yājakaśca mahātejā viśvāmitro'bhavat kratau| ṛtvijaścānupūryeṇa mantravanmantrakovidāḥ|| cakruḥ sarvāṇi karmāṇi yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi|
And in that sacrifice the highly energetic Viśvāmitra acted as the priest. And Ritwijas versed in mantras performed every thing in order with mantras, in accordance with scripture and prescription.

ततः कालेन महता विश्वामित्रो महातपाः॥ चकारावाहनं तत्र भागार्थं सर्वदेवताः। नाभ्यागमंस्तदा तत्र भागार्थं सर्वदेवताः॥
tataḥ kālena mahatā viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ|| cakārāvāhanaṃ tatra bhāgārthaṃ sarvadevatāḥ| nābhyāgamaṃstadā tatra bhāgārthaṃ sarvadevatāḥ||
Then after a long time, Viśvāmitra of mighty austerities invoked thither all the celestials for receiving their respective shares; but the deities did not come to receive them.

ततः कोपसमाविष्टो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः। स्रुवमुद्यम्य सक्रोधस्त्रिशङ्कुमिदमब्रवीत्॥
tataḥ kopasamāviṣṭo viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ| sruvamudyamya sakrodhastriśaṅkumidamabravīt||
Thereupon, getting into a wrath, the mighty ascetic Viśvāmitra, lifting up a garland, wrathfully exclaimed.

पश्य मे तपसो वीर्यं स्वार्जितस्य नरेश्वर। एष त्वां स्वशरीरेण नयामि स्वर्गमोजसा॥
paśya me tapaso vīryaṃ svārjitasya nareśvara| eṣa tvāṃ svaśarīreṇa nayāmi svargamojasā||
O lord of men, do you witness the prowess of my self-earned asceticism. And, O king, do you in person repair to heaven hard to attain.

दुष्प्रापं स्वशरीरेण स्वर्गं गच्छ नरेश्वर। स्वार्जितं किंचिदप्यस्ति मया हि तपसा फलम्॥ राजंस्त्वं तेजसा तस्य सशरीरो दिवं व्रज।
duṣprāpaṃ svaśarīreṇa svargaṃ gaccha nareśvara| svārjitaṃ kiṃcidapyasti mayā hi tapasā phalam|| rājaṃstvaṃ tejasā tasya saśarīro divaṃ vraja|
Something yet remains in me of the selfearned fruit of my asceticism; and, O king, through the energy of that asceticism, do you repair to heaven in person.

उक्तवाक्ये मुनौ तस्मिन् सशरीरो नरेश्वरः॥ दिवं जगाम काकुत्स्थ मुनीनां पश्यतां तदा।
uktavākye munau tasmin saśarīro nareśvaraḥ|| divaṃ jagāma kākutstha munīnāṃ paśyatāṃ tadā|
And on the ascetic saying this, O Kākutstha, that lord of men, bodily ascended heaven in the very sight of the anchorets.

स्वर्गलोकं गतं दृष्ट्वा त्रिशङ्ख पाकशासनः॥ सह सर्वैः सुरगणैरिदं वचनमब्रबीत्।
svargalokaṃ gataṃ dṛṣṭvā triśaṅkha pākaśāsanaḥ|| saha sarvaiḥ suragaṇairidaṃ vacanamabrabīt|
And beholding Trisanku risen to heaven, the subduer of Indra, together with all the celestial said.

त्रिशङ्को गच्छ भूयस्त्वं नासि स्वर्गकृतालयः॥ गुरुशापहतो मूढ पत भूमिमवाक्शिराः।
triśaṅko gaccha bhūyastvaṃ nāsi svargakṛtālayaḥ|| guruśāpahato mūḍha pata bhūmimavākśirāḥ|
O Trisanku, turn you back. You have not earned abode in heaven. O fool, you have been blighted by the curse of your spiritual guide. Do you therefore drop down headlong.

एवमुक्तो महेन्द्रेण त्रिशङ्कुरपतत् पुनः॥ विक्रोशमानस्त्राहीति विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम्।
evamukto mahendreṇa triśaṅkurapatat punaḥ|| vikrośamānastrāhīti viśvāmitraṃ tapodhanam|
The great Indra having spoken thus, Trisanku fell down, crying to the ascetic Viśvāmitra, 'Save me, save me.'

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य क्रोशमानस्य कौशिकः॥ रोषमाहारयत् तीव्र तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्।
tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya krośamānasya kauśikaḥ|| roṣamāhārayat tīvra tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt|
Thereupon, hearing his distressful cries, Kausika waxed mightily wroth, and exclaimed, 'Stay, stay.'

ऋषिमध्ये स तेजस्वी प्रजापतिरिवापरः॥ सृजन् दक्षिणमार्गस्थान् सप्तर्षीनपरान् पुनः। नक्षत्रवंशमपरमसृजत् क्रोधमूर्च्छितः॥
ṛṣimadhye sa tejasvī prajāpatirivāparaḥ|| sṛjan dakṣiṇamārgasthān saptarṣīnaparān punaḥ| nakṣatravaṃśamaparamasṛjat krodhamūrcchitaḥ||
In the midst of the ascetics, like to another Prajapati, he created other seven Rsis* on the Southern way: and also, overwhelined with wrath created another set of stars. *Ursa major.

दक्षिणां दिशमास्थाय ऋषिमध्ये महायशाः। सृष्ट्वा सक्षत्रवंशं च क्रोधेन कलुषीकृतः॥ अन्यमिन्द्रं करिष्यामि लोको वा स्यादनिन्द्रकः। दैवतान्यपि स क्रोधात् स्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे॥
dakṣiṇāṃ diśamāsthāya ṛṣimadhye mahāyaśāḥ| sṛṣṭvā sakṣatravaṃśaṃ ca krodhena kaluṣīkṛtaḥ|| anyamindraṃ kariṣyāmi loko vā syādanindrakaḥ| daivatānyapi sa krodhāt sraṣṭuṃ samupacakrame||
And collied* with passion, that illustrious one in the midst of the ascetics created another system of stars in the southern direction. And, saying, 'I will create another Indra, or the world (that I create) shall be without an Indra.' And in anger, he went the length of creating celestials. *And passion having my best judgement collied.

ततः परमसम्भ्रान्ताः सर्षिसङ्घाः सुरासुराः। विश्वामित्रं महात्मानमूचुः सानुनयं वचः॥
tataḥ paramasambhrāntāḥ sarṣisaṅghāḥ surāsurāḥ| viśvāmitraṃ mahātmānamūcuḥ sānunayaṃ vacaḥ||
Thereupon, in trepidation, the saints and the celestials and the Asuras humbly addressed the high souled Viśvāmitra thus.

अयं राजा महाभाग गुरुशापपरिक्षतः। सशरीरो दिवं यातु नार्हत्येव तपोधन॥
ayaṃ rājā mahābhāga guruśāpaparikṣataḥ| saśarīro divaṃ yātu nārhatyeva tapodhana||
'This king, O highly exalted one, has been visited with the curse of his preceptor, therefore, O ascetic; he deserves not to ascend heaven in person.

तेषां तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा देवानां मुनिपुङ्गवः। अब्रवीत् सुमहद् वाक्यं कौशिकः सर्वदेवताः।.२६ ।।
teṣāṃ tad vacanaṃ śrutvā devānāṃ munipuṅgavaḥ| abravīt sumahad vākyaṃ kauśikaḥ sarvadevatāḥ|.26 ||
Hearing those words of theirs, that best of anchorets, Kausika, in company with the celestials, said these pregnant words.

सशरीरस्य भद्रं वस्त्रिशङ्कोरस्य भूपतेः। आरोहणं प्रतिज्ञातं नानृतं कर्तुमुत्सहे॥
saśarīrasya bhadraṃ vastriśaṅkorasya bhūpateḥ| ārohaṇaṃ pratijñātaṃ nānṛtaṃ kartumutsahe||
Good betide you, I have vowed to this king, Trišanku's bodily ascension unto heaven, therefore, I dare not falsify my vow.

स्वर्गोऽस्तु सशरीरस्य त्रिशङ्कोरस्य शाश्वतः। नक्षत्राणि च सर्वाणि मामकानि ध्रुवाण्यथ ॥ यावल्लोका धरिष्यन्ति तिष्ठन्त्वेतानि सर्वशः। यत् कृतानि सुराः सर्वे तदनुज्ञातुमर्हथ॥
svargo'stu saśarīrasya triśaṅkorasya śāśvataḥ| nakṣatrāṇi ca sarvāṇi māmakāni dhruvāṇyatha || yāvallokā dhariṣyanti tiṣṭhantvetāni sarvaśaḥ| yat kṛtāni surāḥ sarve tadanujñātumarhatha||
Let Trisanku evermore dwell in heaven in person, and let these stars created by me verily endure as long as the worlds. This it behove you, you gods, to ordain.

एवमुक्ताः सुराः सर्वे प्रत्यूचुर्मुनिपुङ्गवम्। एवं भवतु भद्रं ते तिष्ठन्त्वेतानि सर्वशः॥ गगने तान्यनेकानि वैश्वानरपथाद् बहिः। नक्षत्राणि मुनिश्रेष्ठ तेषु ज्योतिःषु जाज्वलन्॥ अवाक्शिरास्त्रिंशङ्कुश्च श्च तिष्ठत्वमरसंनिभः। अनुयास्यन्ति चैतानि ज्योतींषि नृपसत्तमम्॥ कृतार्थं कीर्तिमन्तं च स्वर्गलोकगतं यथा। विश्वामित्रस्तु धर्मात्मा सर्वदेवैरभिष्टुतः॥
evamuktāḥ surāḥ sarve pratyūcurmunipuṅgavam| evaṃ bhavatu bhadraṃ te tiṣṭhantvetāni sarvaśaḥ|| gagane tānyanekāni vaiśvānarapathād bahiḥ| nakṣatrāṇi muniśreṣṭha teṣu jyotiḥṣu jājvalan|| avākśirāstriṃśaṅkuśca śca tiṣṭhatvamarasaṃnibhaḥ| anuyāsyanti caitāni jyotīṃṣi nṛpasattamam|| kṛtārthaṃ kīrtimantaṃ ca svargalokagataṃ yathā| viśvāmitrastu dharmātmā sarvadevairabhiṣṭutaḥ||
Thus addressed, the deities answered that best of ascetics saying, 'So be it, good betide you! All these innumerable stars, O foremost of anchorets, shall remain in the firmament outside the path of Vaiśvānara (Zodiac); and shining in their splendour, Trisanku shall dwell with bended head, like to an immortal. And all these luminous bodies shall follow that best of kings, illustrious and successful, as if he had attained heaven itself.' And the virtuous and exceedingly energetic Viśvāmitra, thus assured by the celestials, said in the midst of the saints, 'You gods, excellent well.'

ऋषिमध्ये महातेजा बाढमित्येव देवताः। ततो देवा महात्मानो ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः। जग्मुर्यथागतं सर्वे यज्ञस्यान्ते नरोत्तम॥
ṛṣimadhye mahātejā bāḍhamityeva devatāḥ| tato devā mahātmāno ṛṣayaśca tapodhanāḥ| jagmuryathāgataṃ sarve yajñasyānte narottama||
Then, after the sacrifice had concluded, the high-souled celestials and the saints of ascetic wealth went to their respective regions, o foremost of men.
