अङ्गदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः सचिवैः सह। लक्ष्मणं कुपितं श्रुत्वा मुमोचासनमात्मवान्॥
aṅgadasya vacaḥ śrutvā sugrīvaḥ sacivaiḥ saha| lakṣmaṇaṃ kupitaṃ śrutvā mumocāsanamātmavān||
Hearing the words of Angada as well as of Laksmana's wrath, the self-controlled Sugriva along with his counsellors, left his seat.

स च तानब्रवीद् वाक्यं निश्चित्य गुरुलाघवम्। मन्त्रज्ञान् मन्त्रकुशलो मन्त्रेषु परिनिष्ठितः॥
sa ca tānabravīd vākyaṃ niścitya gurulāghavam| mantrajñān mantrakuśalo mantreṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ||
Ascertaining the weight and lightness of the present occasion, that one, expert in counsels and abiding by their advice spoke to the expert counsellors, saying.

न मे दुर्व्याहृतं किंचित्रापि मे दुरनुष्ठितम्। लक्ष्मणो राघवभ्राता क्रुद्धः किमिति चिन्तये॥
na me durvyāhṛtaṃ kiṃcitrāpi me duranuṣṭhitam| lakṣmaṇo rāghavabhrātā kruddhaḥ kimiti cintaye||
I have not done him any wrong, nor have I spoken to him any improper word. I do not know why Rāghava's brother Laksmana has become offended with me.

असुहृद्भिर्ममामित्रैर्नित्यमन्तरदर्शिभिः। मम दोषानसम्भूताऽश्रावितो राघवानुजः॥
asuhṛdbhirmamāmitrairnityamantaradarśibhiḥ| mama doṣānasambhūtā'śrāvito rāghavānujaḥ||
Lakşmaņa has been falsely apprised of my imaginary weakness by my enemies, always looking to my dark sides.

अत्र तावद् यथाबुद्धिः सर्वैरेव यथाविधि। भावस्य निश्चयस्तावद् विज्ञेयो निपुणं शनैः॥
atra tāvad yathābuddhiḥ sarvaireva yathāvidhi| bhāvasya niścayastāvad vijñeyo nipuṇaṃ śanaiḥ||
It behoveth you all, to ascertain now speedily according to your knowledge and right understanding (the cause of Laksmana's wrath).

न खल्वस्ति मम त्रासो लक्ष्मणानापि राघवात्। मित्रं स्वस्थानकुपितं जनयत्येव सम्भ्रमम्॥
na khalvasti mama trāso lakṣmaṇānāpi rāghavāt| mitraṃ svasthānakupitaṃ janayatyeva sambhramam||
I do not fear Lakşmaņa or Rāghava; but friends enraged without any cause do invariable produce fear.

सर्वथा सुकरं मित्रं दुष्करं प्रतिपालनम्। अनित्यत्वात् तु चित्तानां प्रीतिरल्पेऽपि भिद्यते॥
sarvathā sukaraṃ mitraṃ duṣkaraṃ pratipālanam| anityatvāt tu cittānāṃ prītiralpe'pi bhidyate||
It is easy to contract friendship but very difficult to sustain it; for owing to the fickleness of our minds, a very slight cause bring about separation.

अतोनिमित्तं त्रस्तोऽहं रामेण तु महात्मना। यन्ममोपकृतं शक्यं प्रतिकर्तुं न तन्मया॥
atonimittaṃ trasto'haṃ rāmeṇa tu mahātmanā| yanmamopakṛtaṃ śakyaṃ pratikartuṃ na tanmayā||
I have not done him any good proportionate to what the high-souled Rāma had done for me; and it is for this reason that I am afraid of him.

सुग्रीवेणैवमुक्ते तु हनूमान् हरिपुंगवः । उवाच स्वेन तर्केण मध्ये वानरमन्त्रिणाम्॥
sugrīveṇaivamukte tu hanūmān haripuṃgavaḥ | uvāca svena tarkeṇa madhye vānaramantriṇām||
Being thus addressed by Sugrīva-Hanumān, the foremost of monkey-counsellors spoke, according to his own understanding, saying.

सर्वथा नैतदाश्चर्ये यत् त्वं हरिगणेश्वर। न विस्मरसि सुस्निग्धमुपकारं कृतं शुभम्॥
sarvathā naitadāścarye yat tvaṃ harigaṇeśvara| na vismarasi susnigdhamupakāraṃ kṛtaṃ śubham||
It is no wonder, O lord of monkeys, that you had not forgot the unexpected benefit, (you hadst received at the hands of Rāma).

राघवेण तु वीरेण भयमुत्सृज्य दूरतः। त्वत्प्रियार्थं हतो वाली शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः॥ सर्वथा प्रणयात् क्रुद्धो राघवो नात्र संशयः। भ्रातरं सम्प्रहीतवाँल्लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिवर्धनम्॥
rāghaveṇa tu vīreṇa bhayamutsṛjya dūrataḥ| tvatpriyārthaṃ hato vālī śakratulyaparākramaḥ|| sarvathā praṇayāt kruddho rāghavo nātra saṃśayaḥ| bhrātaraṃ samprahītavā~llakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmivardhanam||
To encompass your well-being, Vali, powerful as the Lord of celestials, was fearlessly destroyed by the heroic Rāghava. There is not the least doubt, that Rāghava, out of love, is enraged with you, and has despatched his younger brother Lakşmaņa, the enhancer of prosperity.

त्वं प्रमत्तो न जानीषे कालं कालविदा वर। फुल्लसप्तच्छदश्यामा प्रवृत्ता तु शरच्छुभा॥
tvaṃ pramatto na jānīṣe kālaṃ kālavidā vara| phullasaptacchadaśyāmā pravṛttā tu śaracchubhā||
O you foremost of those conversant with time, the auspicious autumn, green with Saptchada flowers, has set in and you, given up to enjoyments, does not perceive it.

निर्मलग्रहनक्षत्रा द्यौः प्रणष्टबलाहका। प्रसन्नाश्च दिशः सर्वाः सरितश्च सरांसि च॥.
nirmalagrahanakṣatrā dyauḥ praṇaṣṭabalāhakā| prasannāśca diśaḥ sarvāḥ saritaśca sarāṃsi ca||.
The sky, having the clouds removed, is full of clear stars and planets. The quarters, the ponds and rivers are all clear.

प्राप्तमुद्योगकालं तु नावैषि हरिपुंगव। त्वं प्रमत्त इति व्यक्तं लक्ष्मणोऽयमिहागतः॥
prāptamudyogakālaṃ tu nāvaiṣi haripuṃgava| tvaṃ pramatta iti vyaktaṃ lakṣmaṇo'yamihāgataḥ||
O best of monkeys, finding you forgetful, Lakṣmaṇa has come here to inform you that the proper time has arrived.

आर्तस्य हृतदारस्य परुषं पुरुषान्तरात्। वचनं मर्षणीयं ते राघवस्य महात्मनः॥
ārtasya hṛtadārasya paruṣaṃ puruṣāntarāt| vacanaṃ marṣaṇīyaṃ te rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ||
Do you patiently hear all these harsh words of the high-souled Rāma, racked with sorrow and separated from his spouse, which Laksmana, shall relate to you.

कृतापराधस्य हि ते नान्यत् पश्याम्यहं क्षमम्। अन्तरेणाञ्जलिं बद्ध्वा लक्ष्मणस्य प्रसादनात्॥
kṛtāparādhasya hi te nānyat paśyāmyahaṃ kṣamam| antareṇāñjaliṃ baddhvā lakṣmaṇasya prasādanāt||
You have acted improperly towards him, and I do not find any thing tending to your welfare but your satisfying Lakşmana with folded hands.

मन्त्रिभिर्वाच्यो ह्यवश्यं पार्थिवो हितम्। इत एव भयं त्यक्त्वा ब्रवीम्यवधृतं वचः॥
mantribhirvācyo hyavaśyaṃ pārthivo hitam| ita eva bhayaṃ tyaktvā bravīmyavadhṛtaṃ vacaḥ||
The kings should be addressed with auspicious words by their counsellors always ministering to them proper counsels. And it is for this reason, I am addressing you with these sound words.

अभिक्रुद्धः समर्थो हि चापमुद्यम्य राघवः। सदेवासुरगन्धर्वं वशे स्थापयितुं जगत्॥
abhikruddhaḥ samartho hi cāpamudyamya rāghavaḥ| sadevāsuragandharvaṃ vaśe sthāpayituṃ jagat||
Rāghava, taking up his bow, while enraged, can bring under subjection the entire world, inhabited by by the celestials, Asuras and Gandharvas.

न स क्षमः कोपयितुं यः प्रसाद्यः पुनर्भवेत्। पूर्वोपकारं स्मरता कृतज्ञेन विशेषतः॥
na sa kṣamaḥ kopayituṃ yaḥ prasādyaḥ punarbhavet| pūrvopakāraṃ smaratā kṛtajñena viśeṣataḥ||
Remembering his former service, it does not behove you, grateful as you are, to excite his wrath, who should be pleased again.

तस्य मूर्जा प्रणम्य त्वं सपुत्रः ससुहृज्जनः। राजस्तिष्ठ स्वसमये भर्तुर्भार्येव तद्वशे॥
tasya mūrjā praṇamya tvaṃ saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ| rājastiṣṭha svasamaye bharturbhāryeva tadvaśe||
Bowing to him, with your children and friends, do you, O king, satisfying your promise, seek his shelter like to a wife placing herself under the control of her husband.

न रामरामानुजशासनं त्वया कपीन्द्र युक्तं मनसाऽप्यपोहितुम्। मनो हि ते ज्ञास्यति मानुषं बलं सराघवस्यास्य सुरेन्द्रवर्चसः॥
na rāmarāmānujaśāsanaṃ tvayā kapīndra yuktaṃ manasā'pyapohitum| mano hi te jñāsyati mānuṣaṃ balaṃ sarāghavasyāsya surendravarcasaḥ||
O lord of monkeys, it does not behove you, to neglect even in thought, the behests of Rāma and his younger brother; for you are fully aware of the prowess of Rāghava like to the lord of celestials, and passing human power.
