तां तथा पतितां दृष्ट्वा विरूपां शोणितोक्षिताम्। भगिनीं क्रोधसंतप्तः शरः पप्रच्छ राक्षसः॥
tāṃ tathā patitāṃ dṛṣṭvā virūpāṃ śoṇitokṣitām| bhaginīṃ krodhasaṃtaptaḥ śaraḥ papraccha rākṣasaḥ||
Seeing his sister deformed, and covered with blood, fallen on the ground, the Raksasa, Khara, fired with wrath asked her.

उत्तिष्ठ तावदाख्याहि प्रमोहं जहि सम्भ्रमम्। व्यक्तमाख्याहि केन त्वमेवंरूपा विरूपिता॥
uttiṣṭha tāvadākhyāhi pramohaṃ jahi sambhramam| vyaktamākhyāhi kena tvamevaṃrūpā virūpitā||
Arise! Leave off fear and amazement. Tell me plainly by whom you have been thus deformed.

कः कृष्णसर्पमासीनमाशीविषमनागसम्। तुदत्यभिसमापनमङ्गुल्यग्रेण लीलया॥
kaḥ kṛṣṇasarpamāsīnamāśīviṣamanāgasam| tudatyabhisamāpanamaṅgulyagreṇa līlayā||

कालपाशं समासज्य कण्ठे मोहान बुध्यते। यस्त्वामद्य समासाद्य पीतवान् विषमुत्तमम्॥
kālapāśaṃ samāsajya kaṇṭhe mohāna budhyate| yastvāmadya samāsādya pītavān viṣamuttamam||
He that coming in contact with you has to-day drunk virulent poison, winding a fatal noose round about his neck, know it not through ignorance.

बलविक्रमसम्पन्ना कामगा कामरूपिणी। इमामवस्थां नीता त्वं केनान्तकसमागता॥
balavikramasampannā kāmagā kāmarūpiṇī| imāmavasthāṃ nītā tvaṃ kenāntakasamāgatā||
Endowed with strength and prowess, ranging about at will, wearing shapes at pleasure, and resembling the destroyer himself, going to whom hast you come by this condition?

देवगन्धर्वभूतानामृषीणां च महात्मनाम्। कोऽयमेवं महावीर्यस्त्वां विरूपां चकार ह॥

Who among the gods, Gandharvas or creatures or the light souled saints is of such mighty energy as to have deformed you?

नहि पश्याम्यहं लोके यः कुर्यान्मम विप्रियम्। अमरेषु सहस्राक्षं महेन्द्रं पाकशासनम्।७।।
nahi paśyāmyahaṃ loke yaḥ kuryānmama vipriyam| amareṣu sahasrākṣaṃ mahendraṃ pākaśāsanam|7||
In this world I do not see him that would do me : wrong, not even the mighty Indra, the thousand eyed tamer of the demon Pāka.

अद्याहं मार्गणैः प्राणानादास्ये जीवितान्तगैः। सलिले क्षीरमासक्तं निष्पिबन्निव सारसः॥ निहतस्य मया संख्ये शरसंकृत्तमर्मणः। सफेनं रुधिरं कस्य मेदिनी पातुमिच्छति॥
adyāhaṃ mārgaṇaiḥ prāṇānādāsye jīvitāntagaiḥ| salile kṣīramāsaktaṃ niṣpibanniva sārasaḥ|| nihatasya mayā saṃkhye śarasaṃkṛttamarmaṇaḥ| saphenaṃ rudhiraṃ kasya medinī pātumicchati||
a crane Even as afflicted with thirst appropriate milk mixed in water (leaving the latter out), so by means of fleet an lifedestroying shafts I will among the immortals take the life of that chastiser. The frothy blood of whom, having his marrow pierced (by me) and slain by me in battle, dose the Earth wish to drink?

कस्य पत्ररथाः कायान्मांसमुत्कृत्य संगताः। प्रहृष्टा भक्षयिष्यन्ति निहतस्य मया रणे॥
kasya patrarathāḥ kāyānmāṃsamutkṛtya saṃgatāḥ| prahṛṣṭā bhakṣayiṣyanti nihatasya mayā raṇe||
Tearing off flesh from the corpse of whom slain by me in conflict, shall the birds so joyfully feed on it?

तं न देवा न गन्धर्वा न पिशाचा न राक्षसाः। मयापकृष्टं कृपणं शक्तास्त्रातुं महाहवे॥
taṃ na devā na gandharvā na piśācā na rākṣasāḥ| mayāpakṛṣṭaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ śaktāstrātuṃ mahāhave||
Him, whom I shall wrong mightily, neither the gods, nor the Gandharvas, nor the Piśācas, nor the Rākşasas, will be able to rescue in fierce encounter.

उपलभ्य शनैः संज्ञां तं मे शंसितुमर्हसि। येन त्वं दुर्विनीतेन वने विक्रम्य निर्जिता॥
upalabhya śanaiḥ saṃjñāṃ taṃ me śaṃsitumarhasi| yena tvaṃ durvinītena vane vikramya nirjitā||
Recovering by degrees your sense, it behoves you to tell me what individual it was of execrable character, who by his prowess, half humbled you in the forest.

इति भ्रातुर्वचः श्रुत्वा कुद्धस्य च विशेषतः। ततः शूर्पणखा वाक्यं सवाष्पमिदमब्रवीत्॥
iti bhrāturvacaḥ śrutvā kuddhasya ca viśeṣataḥ| tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā vākyaṃ savāṣpamidamabravīt||

तरुणौ रूपसम्पनौ सुकुमारौ महाबलौ। पुण्डरीकविशालाक्षौ चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरौ॥ फलमूलाशनौ दान्तौ तापसौ ब्रह्मचारिणौ। पुत्रौ दशरथस्यास्तां भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ॥ गन्धर्वराजप्रतिमौ पार्थिवव्यञ्जनान्वितौ। देवौ वा दानवावेतौ न तर्कयितुमुत्सहे ॥
taruṇau rūpasampanau sukumārau mahābalau| puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣau cīrakṛṣṇājināmbarau|| phalamūlāśanau dāntau tāpasau brahmacāriṇau| putrau daśarathasyāstāṃ bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau|| gandharvarājapratimau pārthivavyañjanānvitau| devau vā dānavāvetau na tarkayitumutsahe ||
Tender, and endowed with beauty, possessed of youth and gifted with great strength, with expansive eyes resembling white lotuses; clad in bark and dark dear-skins subsisting on fruits and roots, having their senses under control; leading an ascetic life and a Brahmacarya mode of existence; there are two sons of Dasaratha the brothers Räma and Lakşmaņa resembling the Sovereign of the Gandharvas, and marked with signs betokening royalty. I cannot ascertain whether they be celestial, or human beings.

तरुणी रूपसम्पन्ना सर्वाभरणभूषिता। दृष्ट्वा तत्र मया नारी तयोर्मध्ये सुमध्यमा॥
taruṇī rūpasampannā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā| dṛṣṭvā tatra mayā nārī tayormadhye sumadhyamā||
And between them I saw there a youthful female furnished with grace, and having a dainty waist; adorned with every kind of ornament.

ताभ्यामुभाभ्यां सम्भूय प्रमदामधिकृत्य ताम्। इमामवस्थां नीताहं यथाऽनाथाऽसती तथा॥
tābhyāmubhābhyāṃ sambhūya pramadāmadhikṛtya tām| imāmavasthāṃ nītāhaṃ yathā'nāthā'satī tathā||
And it is on account of this feinale that I have like one unchaste and uncared for, have come by this condition at their hands.

तस्याश्चानृजुवृत्तायास्तयोश्च हतयोरहम्। सफेनं पातुमिच्छामि रुधिरं रणमूर्धनि॥
tasyāścānṛjuvṛttāyāstayośca hatayoraham| saphenaṃ pātumicchāmi rudhiraṃ raṇamūrdhani||
Nor I wish in the midst of encounter to drink the frothy blood of that crooked one as well as those two slain (in battle).

एव मे प्रथमः कामः कृतस्तत्र त्वया भवेत्। तस्यास्तयोश्च रुधिरं पिबेयमहमाहवे॥
eva me prathamaḥ kāmaḥ kṛtastatra tvayā bhavet| tasyāstayośca rudhiraṃ pibeyamahamāhave||
Let this my prime wish be crowned there with fruition. her and their blood will I drink in dreadful conflict.

इति तस्यां ब्रुवाणायां चतुर्दश महाबलान्। व्यादिदेश खरः क्रुद्धो राक्षसानन्तकोपमान्॥ मानुषौ शस्त्रसम्पन्नौ चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरौ। प्रविष्टौ दण्डकारण्यं घोरं प्रमदया सह ॥ तौ हत्वा तां च दुर्वृत्तामुपावर्तितुमर्हथ। इयं च भगिनी तेषां रुधिरं मम पास्यति ॥
iti tasyāṃ bruvāṇāyāṃ caturdaśa mahābalān| vyādideśa kharaḥ kruddho rākṣasānantakopamān|| mānuṣau śastrasampannau cīrakṛṣṇājināmbarau| praviṣṭau daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ ghoraṃ pramadayā saha || tau hatvā tāṃ ca durvṛttāmupāvartitumarhatha| iyaṃ ca bhaginī teṣāṃ rudhiraṃ mama pāsyati ||
As she said this, Khara wrought up with boundless passion, said, Two human beings accoutred in arins, and wearing bark and dark deer-skins have in company with a female entered this deep Dandaka forest. Do you returni, after slaying them, as well as that wicked one. And this sister of mine will drink their blood.

मनोरथोऽयमिष्टोऽस्या भगिन्या मम राक्षसाः। शीघ्रं सम्पाद्यतां गत्वा तौ प्रमथ्य स्वतेजसा ॥
manoratho'yamiṣṭo'syā bhaginyā mama rākṣasāḥ| śīghraṃ sampādyatāṃ gatvā tau pramathya svatejasā ||
You Rākşasas, even this is my sister's dear desire. Repairing thither, specdily accomplish this, bearing them down by your native might.

युष्माभिनिहतौ दृष्ट्वा ताबुभौ भ्रातरौ रणे। इयं प्रहृष्टा मुदिता रुधिरं युधि पास्यति ॥
yuṣmābhinihatau dṛṣṭvā tābubhau bhrātarau raṇe| iyaṃ prahṛṣṭā muditā rudhiraṃ yudhi pāsyati ||
Seeing those two brothers slain by you this one exceedingly rejoiced, will drink their blood in the field.

इति प्रतिसमादिष्टा राक्षसास्ते चतुर्दश। तत्र जग्मुस्तया सार्धे घना वातेरिता इव ॥
iti pratisamādiṣṭā rākṣasāste caturdaśa| tatra jagmustayā sārdhe ghanā vāteritā iva ||
Thus commissioned, those fourteen Räksasas set out there like clouds driven by the winds, accompanied by Śürpanakhā.
