अरण्यकाण्डः सर्गः 63

स राजपुत्रः प्रियया विहीनः शोकेन मोहेन च पीड्यमानः। विषादयन् भ्रातरमार्तरूपो भूयो विषादं प्रविवेश तीव्रम्॥

sa rājaputraḥ priyayā vihīnaḥ śokena mohena ca pīḍyamānaḥ| viṣādayan bhrātaramārtarūpo bhūyo viṣādaṃ praviveśa tīvram||

That son of a king, stricken as he was with grief consequent upon separation from his dear one, was again overwhelmed with a terrible grief after causing sorrow to his brother,

स लक्ष्मणं शोकवशाभिपन्न शोके निमग्नो विपुले तु रामः। मुष्णं विनिःश्वस्य रुदन् सशोकम्॥

sa lakṣmaṇaṃ śokavaśābhipanna śoke nimagno vipule tu rāmaḥ| muṣṇaṃ viniḥśvasya rudan saśokam||

Sunk in the abyss of grief, Rāma, sighing hot and weeping piteously, spoke to Laksmana who was equally aggrieved, words worthy of being said on that occasion.

न मद्विधो दुष्कृतकर्मकारी मन्ये द्वितीयोऽस्ति वसुंधरायाम्। शोकानुशोको हि परम्पराया मामेति भिन्दन् हृदयं मनश्च ॥

na madvidho duṣkṛtakarmakārī manye dvitīyo'sti vasuṃdharāyām| śokānuśoko hi paramparāyā māmeti bhindan hṛdayaṃ manaśca ||

Methinks there is none other on this earth like me, the perpetrator of vicious crimes. My heart or soul is not riven though crushed again and again without respite with a multitude of doleful events.

पूर्वं मया नूनमभीप्सितानि पापानि कर्माण्यसकृत्कृतानि। तत्रायमद्यापतितो विपाको दुःखेन दुःखं यदहं विशामि॥

pūrvaṃ mayā nūnamabhīpsitāni pāpāni karmāṇyasakṛtkṛtāni| tatrāyamadyāpatito vipāko duḥkhena duḥkhaṃ yadahaṃ viśāmi||

Surely did I perpetrate many a vicious deed in of my my previous birth, the fruit of which I do now suffer and in consequence where-of misfortune after misfortune has befallen me.

राज्यप्रणाशः स्वजनैर्वियोगः पितुर्विनाशो जननीवियोगः। मापूरयन्ति प्रविचिन्तितानि॥

rājyapraṇāśaḥ svajanairviyogaḥ piturvināśo jananīviyogaḥ| māpūrayanti pravicintitāni||

Coming within the compass remembrance, the loss of my kingdom, the death of my father, the separation of my mother and other kinsmen culminates my grief.

सर्वं तु दुःखं मम लक्ष्मणेदं शान्तं शरीरे वनमेत्य क्लेशम्। सीतावियोगात् पुनरप्युदीर्णं काष्ठरिवाग्निः सहसोपदीप्तः॥

sarvaṃ tu duḥkhaṃ mama lakṣmaṇedaṃ śāntaṃ śarīre vanametya kleśam| sītāviyogāt punarapyudīrṇaṃ kāṣṭharivāgniḥ sahasopadīptaḥ||

Repairing to woods, O Laksmana, in Sita's company my grief was assuaged, nay I did not suffer physical affliction even. Without Sītā these sorrows have grown anew like to fire flaming again by means of fuel.

सा नूनमार्या मम राक्षसेन ह्यभ्याहता खं समुपेत्य भीरुः। अप्यस्वरं सुस्वरविप्रलापा भयेन विक्रन्दितवत्यभीक्ष्णम्॥

sā nūnamāryā mama rākṣasena hyabhyāhatā khaṃ samupetya bhīruḥ| apyasvaraṃ susvaravipralāpā bhayena vikranditavatyabhīkṣṇam||

Truly my wife, timid as she is, has been carried away by a Rākşasa by the ethereal track. Alas! doubtless it is, that one of pleasant accents, wept piteously out of fear many a time and oft.

तौ लोहितस्य प्रियदर्शनस्य सदोचितावुत्तमचन्दनस्य। वृत्तौ स्तनौ शोणितपङ्कदिग्धौ नूनं प्रियाया मम नाभिपातः॥

tau lohitasya priyadarśanasya sadocitāvuttamacandanasya| vṛttau stanau śoṇitapaṅkadigdhau nūnaṃ priyāyā mama nābhipātaḥ||

For certain my dear wife's breast round and sprinkled as it was with red sandal paste, was bathed in blood (while devoured by the Rākş asas) but there is no death for me.

तच्छ्लक्ष्णसुव्यक्तमृदुप्रलापं तस्या मुखं कुञ्चितकेशभारम्। रक्षोवशं नूनमुपागताया न भ्राजते राहुमुखे यथेन्दुः॥

tacchlakṣṇasuvyaktamṛdupralāpaṃ tasyā mukhaṃ kuñcitakeśabhāram| rakṣovaśaṃ nūnamupāgatāyā na bhrājate rāhumukhe yathenduḥ||

That countenance the beauty of which was enhanced by a head of curly hair and which used to emit forth tender, soft and clear accents, has become pale, being taken possession of by the Rākşasas like to the Moon almost devoured by Rahu.

तां हारपाशस्य सदोचितान्तां ग्रीवां प्रियाया मम सुव्रतायाः। रक्षांसि नूनं परिपीतवन्ति शून्ये हि भित्त्वा रुधिराशनानि॥

tāṃ hārapāśasya sadocitāntāṃ grīvāṃ priyāyā mama suvratāyāḥ| rakṣāṃsi nūnaṃ paripītavanti śūnye hi bhittvā rudhirāśanāni||

Surely have the Räkşasas subsisting on gore drunk her blood in the sky tearing off the neck of my dear one ever devoted to pious observances.

मया विहीना विजने वने सा रक्षोभिरावृत्य विकृष्यमाणा। नूनं विनादं कुररीव दीना सा मुक्तवत्यायतकान्तनेत्रा ॥

mayā vihīnā vijane vane sā rakṣobhirāvṛtya vikṛṣyamāṇā| nūnaṃ vinādaṃ kurarīva dīnā sā muktavatyāyatakāntanetrā ||

Surely did that one of beautifully expansive eyes cry aloud poorly like to a hind when she was drawn hither and thither by the Rākşasas encircling her in the forest in my absence.

अस्मिन् मया सार्धमुदारशीला शिलातले पूर्वमुपोपविष्टा। कान्तस्मिता लक्ष्मण जातहासा त्वामाह सीता बहुवाक्यजातम्॥

asmin mayā sārdhamudāraśīlā śilātale pūrvamupopaviṣṭā| kāntasmitā lakṣmaṇa jātahāsā tvāmāha sītā bahuvākyajātam||

O Lakşmana, sitting at the foot of this hill with me that large-hearted, pious Sītā, of smiling countenance, used to address you on many a topic.

गोदावरीयं सरितां वरिष्ठा प्रिया प्रियाया मम नित्यकालम्। अप्यत्र गच्छेदिति चिन्तयामि नैकाकिनी याति हि सा कदाचित् ॥

godāvarīyaṃ saritāṃ variṣṭhā priyā priyāyā mama nityakālam| apyatra gacchediti cintayāmi naikākinī yāti hi sā kadācit ||

This is Godāvarī, the best of rivers, my dear wife took delight in her-has she gone there?—But she never goes there alone.

पद्मानना पद्मपलाशनेत्रा पद्मानि वाऽऽनेतुमभिप्रयाता। तदप्ययुक्तं नहि सा कदाचिन् मया विना गच्छति पङ्कजानि॥

padmānanā padmapalāśanetrā padmāni vā''netumabhiprayātā| tadapyayuktaṃ nahi sā kadācin mayā vinā gacchati paṅkajāni||

Or has Janaki having eyes resembling lotuspetals has gone to bring lotuses? But how is that possible, she never goes without me to bring lotuses.

कामं त्विदं पुष्पितवृक्षषण्डं नानाविधैः पक्षिगणैरुपेतम्। मेकाकिनी सातिबिभेति भीरुः॥

kāmaṃ tvidaṃ puṣpitavṛkṣaṣaṇḍaṃ nānāvidhaiḥ pakṣigaṇairupetam| mekākinī sātibibheti bhīruḥ||

Has she entered at her pleasure this forest filled with many flowery trees and diverse birds? But that is not possible too-she is timid and fear much to enter alone in this forest.

आदित्य भो लोककृताकृतज्ञ लोकस्य सत्यानृतकर्मसाक्षिन्। मम प्रिया सा क्व गता हृता वा शंसस्व मे शोकहतस्य सर्वम्॥

āditya bho lokakṛtākṛtajña lokasya satyānṛtakarmasākṣin| mama priyā sā kva gatā hṛtā vā śaṃsasva me śokahatasya sarvam||

O.Aditya, know you the pious and vicious actions of men; bear you testimony to the truth and untruth of their actions-do you tell me, pray, who am stricken with grief, whither has my dear on repaired, or whether has she been killed?

लोकेषु सर्वेषु न नास्ति किंचिद् यत् तेन नित्यं विदितं भवेत् तत्। शंसस्व वायो कुलपालिनी तां मृता हृता वा पथि वर्तते वा॥

lokeṣu sarveṣu na nāsti kiṃcid yat tena nityaṃ viditaṃ bhavet tat| śaṃsasva vāyo kulapālinī tāṃ mṛtā hṛtā vā pathi vartate vā||

O Air, there is nothing on earth which is not within the compass of your vision, do you relate to me whether Sītā preserving the fame of my ancestry, has been killed or carried away or if she wait on the way.

इतीव तं शोकविधेयदेह रामं विसंज्ञं विलपन्तमेव। उवाच सौमित्रिरदीनसत्त्वो न्याय्ये स्थितः कालयुतं च वाक्यम्॥

itīva taṃ śokavidheyadeha rāmaṃ visaṃjñaṃ vilapantameva| uvāca saumitriradīnasattvo nyāyye sthitaḥ kālayutaṃ ca vākyam||

After Rāma had bewailed thus being beside himself with grief, Saumitrī, ever treading the right path and not of poorly mind spoke words worthy of being said on that occasion.

शोकं विसृज्याद्य धृतिं भजस्व सोत्साहता चास्तु विमार्गणेऽस्याः। उत्साहवन्तो हि नरा न लोके सीदन्ति कर्मस्वतिदुष्करेषु॥.

śokaṃ visṛjyādya dhṛtiṃ bhajasva sotsāhatā cāstu vimārgaṇe'syāḥ| utsāhavanto hi narā na loke sīdanti karmasvatiduṣkareṣu||.

Do you take heart renouncing your grief and engage with energy of Sita. Persons of high energy are never exhausted on the earth in quest even in the face of arduous works.

इतीव सौमित्रिमुदापौरुषं ब्रुवन्तमार्तं रघुवंशसत्तमः। न चिन्तयामास धृतिं विमुक्तवान् पुनश्च दुःखं महदभ्युपागमत्॥

itīva saumitrimudāpauruṣaṃ bruvantamārtaṃ raghuvaṃśasattamaḥ| na cintayāmāsa dhṛtiṃ vimuktavān punaśca duḥkhaṃ mahadabhyupāgamat||

The highly powerful Lakşmaņa having spoken thus being afflicted with grief, Rāma, the best of Raghu's descendants, did not consider that worth pondering over. Renouncing patience he again indulged in excessive grief.
