The Power of Dua: Supplication in Islam
Dua, or supplication, is the essence of worship in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described it as "the weapon of the believer" and "the spirit of worship." Unlike the formal obligatory prayers (salah), dua is an intimate, personal conversation between a servant and Allah — one that can be made at any time, in any language, and in any state. Through dua, Muslims express gratitude, seek guidance, ask for forgiveness, and place their deepest needs before their Lord.
Islamic tradition teaches several etiquettes for making dua: beginning with praise of Allah and salutations upon the Prophet, having sincere conviction that Allah will answer, being persistent and not hasty, and choosing blessed times such as the last third of the night, between the adhan and iqamah, while fasting, and during prostration in prayer. The Quran itself encourages believers: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (40:60).
