Throughout Islamic tradition, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has been known by many names and honorific titles, each describing a quality of his noble character or a role he fulfilled in conveying the divine message. These names appear in the Quran, the hadith collections of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and the works of classical scholars such as Imam al-Jazuli in his renowned Dala'il al-Khayrat.
Among the most well-known are Muhammad (the Praised One), Ahmad (the Most Commendable), Al-Mustafa (the Chosen), Ar-Rasul (the Messenger), and Al-Amin (the Trustworthy). The Quran itself uses several names: "And remember when Jesus, son of Mary, said, 'O Children of Israel, I am the messenger of Allah to you, confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad'" (Quran 61:6).
Scholars have traditionally compiled these names to help Muslims deepen their love and understanding of the Prophet's multifaceted character. Reflecting on these names is considered a form of sending salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet, which the Quran encourages in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:56): "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace."
