Islamic Calendar

The Islamic calendar, known as the Hijri calendar, is a purely lunar system consisting of twelve months that follow the cycles of the moon. Established during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), it begins from the year of the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijrah) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. Because each lunar month is approximately 29 to 30 days, the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year, causing Islamic dates to shift through the seasons over time.

Several months hold special significance in Islam. Ramadan, the ninth month, is the month of fasting and heightened devotion. Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month, hosts the annual Hajj pilgrimage and the celebration of Eid al-Adha. Muharram, the first month, includes the Day of Ashura — a day of fasting and reflection. Rajab and Shaban are considered sacred months of spiritual preparation before Ramadan.
